In several reviews I've seen pictures of housings with a rope handle clipped off to the ball mounts and was curious if this is a DIY project or something commercially available. Seems like a great option when handing opt he housing off getting in and out of the water and I'm curious if someone can share a more detailed pic or two OS this setup. My last trip proved to be a bit problematic with a crew that wasn't used to handling SLR housings and kept grabbing my strobe arms. I have a few LOB trips coming up and would like to make life a bit easier if possible.
Suggestions greatly appreciated

Two brass clips
Two-foot length of nylon rope
One-foot length of plastic tubing
The design could be more elegant if you splice the rope ends or use colored rope (green for go?).
The handle makes the rig's center of gravity low - much easier to carry with one hand on a rocking boat. With the handle, the boat crew knows exactly how to grab and carry your rid. Don't leave home without one.

Is the tubing just for comfort or is there some other purpose?

If you lost your Nauticam handle, its super easy to make one just like it. I actually made a bunch of them, because I wanted some in different lengths, I wanted them to be a little wider than the one that came with the housing and also, I wanted the handles to be in a different color to help my housing look a little different to avoid confusion, in case there is a few on them sitting on the dive deck. Basically, I got some multicolored line and a few stainless steel rings and braided myself a few handles. What I did differently from the supplied handle was that instead of using one thick line, I used line that was a bit thinner but quadrupled the line so that each "run" of the braid consisted of 4 lined. This helped form a "flatter" handle that is a a lot more comfortable to carry. The only problem I had that was that since I live on a small island, my choice of line-colors is limited, and the best line I could find was... pink. So I as soon as my local hardware store gets another color line in, I will have to make remedy this by making new handles.

This guy's 10 yr old daughter makes them. They are made from 550 paracord. Tell them it is for an UW camera. She can make them in any color combination imaginable, and in any length. I got red, and blue with reflective white strands. I need to add some clips to to the ends of mine, but I like it.

I think the handles are an extra part, and are available to purchase in addition to the housing. Certainly I bought mine. They are not supplied with the housing as standard.
If you are unwilling to do so, there are lots of very cool DIY ideas here too!
I would contact your local Nauticam dealer, or if that doesn't work, Nauticam USA.
