Here's one of the cover comps we chose not to use. Normally we'll try four or five images in a various cover layouts, just because they look so much different with text in place and color accents. So, it won't be another shark cover, and something more in synch with our coverage of the National Marine Sanctuaries program and the beautiful marine life off our shores. I'll post again from the pressroom in a few days and show the real, new cover rolling off the press.

Always look forward to each new issue. Teaches me; inspires; takes me away. Can't ask for more from a magazine...

this whitie is huge relative to the divers. Is this a natural shot or a photoshop composition with changes in sizing? I have not seen white sharks nearly as big as this one, neither in Guadaluope nor in South Africa....

You can see the shark is much closer to the lens than the cage - which is why the shark is lit by the strobes and the cage is not. So it is just a perspective thing.

Giant Great White's seem popular. I thought the same with the Daniel Botelho shots on the Telegraph site yesterday.

Alex is right, it is a perspective thing. Taken with a 14mm II lens on a Canon 5DMKII, but with a submersible Seacam polecam (cage-to-cage) so the dome was quite near the shark.

Here is the final cover we ran for the new Alert Diver, photo by Bob Talbot. It is now printed, after an arduous 3 days on press in Wisconsin, and will arrive member mailboxes beginning next week.

For those not DAN America members: http://www.tinyurl.c...lipbook-q4-2012

Flipbooks not nearly as nice as reading print version or magazine, or seeing on iPad or Android, but will give a sense of the content.

Time slips away. Going back on press again January 27 for Winter 2013 Alert Diver. Excited to see this one roll off the press, as there are some really nice photos to print.

Thanks for asking, Mike. Here you go ... A terrific shot by John Weller from his feature coverage of the Ross Sea.
