This article is graphic and sickening...sad to see the juvenile whale shark and a HUGE mako slaughtered. It is to feed a village, and not for commercial reasons as I understand, but is indirectly the cause of commercial fishing exhausting other sea life the village used to eat. One wonders if some kind of aid could be established to provide them with an alternate food source....

Unfortunately, Lamalhera has a long history of cetacean/elasmobranch hunting, where it is very must imbibed into the society of the area. Even more unfortunate is how even tourists now pay money to watch the hunts, thus making it even harder for NGOs to convince them to hunt less. They've been doing this for a while now. Asking them to stop is like asking the Inuit or any other traditional hunters to stop whaling. There are people at work on this.
That said, it is an amazing hunt to watch, since they still hunt the old fashion way... unlike some other native hunters in North America. One can learn more about the culture from their own pictures:

Inuit have a very different situation, they have bowline whale number rising rapidly(get to a point of out of balance). You could hardly say that with the Mako shark or the Whale shark in SE-Asia.
Also the "tribal existance" is about over to in SE asia, even in australiasia.
Here in Australia Turtle numbers are blowing out due to over fishing of tiger sharks.

It's a real drama now, man's impact have upset a anchient balance in the wheel of life, even if it's just pumping sh!t into a waterway or farm run off- EPA laws need to be taken more seriously.
What about tar sands in the Usa.........the list is mind boggling.
Time to start educating more Ecologists and less lawyers is now.
Sadistic practices have no place in the 21st century- No excuses!
I really believe that 1st world countries giving foriegn aid is causing huge imbalances in the human population, which is the greatest issue of all.
