Hi there,
my eyes start to show some signs of wear and tear making it difficult to see the cameras monitor sharp.
I was thinking of getting a viewfinder but i realized that a external monitor may be a (expensive) solution,
but will give me the handy solution that i can rotate the monitor in the right direction for a special angle of view.
A external monitor wont solve the problem of suffering of presbyopia but the bigger screen will help to see the picture better
and the orientable monitor would help greatly with macro or - inside a hole - pictures.

Does anybody have experience with using a external monitor for taking pictures under water?

The simplest & cheapest solution is a seamless, gradual diopter ground into a dive mask. Not need to make diopter adjustments on the camera or add on view finder. If you want the add on view finder, some allow diopter adjustments.

i already use some DiveOptx type lenses, better quality and glued in but i am looking for something better.

We are currently working on a solution similar to what Chris requested. I hope to have a prototype working within the next three months and will announce it here on wetpixel when it is ready for market. We are hoping to keep the cost down to be in line with a 180 degree viewfinder such as the Aquaview or something similar in the $1000 range.

I will be the next 6 month in Costa Rica, so if you would like to test the monitor under "rough" conditions just let me know

Unfortunately is discovered thet the D800 has "only" a mini HDMI plug and this makes the monitor more complicated
Brainstorming last night doing while nothing - except diving, editing, eating and sleeping - while in a short vacancy in Oman we found some problems:
- first i hope that you will build a HDMI model too!
- HDMI plugs are rather long and may be too long to sit inside the housing. Please think also about a 90° angeled mini HDMI plug otherwise you
will have problems with certain tight-fit housings.
- If possible it would be supercool if you can find a solution to use a existing nikonos bulkhead to bring the HDMI signal out of the housing as this will
avoid to drill another hole and fit another bulkhead. This is especially important to people like me using fiber optic cables and have a free Nikonos plug.
