I only have the 16-35 II which I presently shoot topside with the 5D3. Of all the glass I own, this is the sharpest. I just don't see the significantly cheaper 17-40 as coming close...

Fairly massive improvement in 16-35II over original 16-35 and 17-40. Both in contrast and sharpness. Needs more port extension though.

16-35, it's a faster lens, and sharper.
