Earlier in the year - I posted that I had sold my Fuji F31, and was looking for a new camera.
I had a number of pointers to the Olympus XZ-1, there were a few things I wanted it missed ... in particular lack of full HD video.
The new XZ-2 is now out ... what is the considered opinion on this as my replacement ?

Same lens (which was bright & well rated), slightly larger sensor increased ASA to 12,800
Increase to 12.8 mega pixel and full HD video.

However seeing a number of reviews that point instead to Sony RX100 as a consistent performer ......... I have never owned a Sony Camera ...

What would those that know suggest ?

I am a 'happy snapper', don't venture deeper than 40m .... I did try strobes & wide angle lenses and it was not for me ............

Probably used 50% of time outside scuba ... so a good all rounder needed.

Just sold an XZ1 + PT050 , now I have an RX100 and Nauticam, had good results but I wanted more while remaining as compact as possible. It is not an easy choice.
Money wise an XZ2 + Oly housing will cost much less and if you do not want to add strobes or wet lenses it will be enough , on the other side RX100 is the new king of the compact cameras and a real joy to use.
Out of the water you will see a difference only printing big: A2 or more, underwater only adding strobes or wet lenses, this is my two cents contribute.

I'm looking at selling my XZ1 and PT050 as well and am looking at my options.

Am starting to look for feedback on the RX100, G-15 and S100/110. I use subsee +5 and +10 as I love to shoot supermacro.

This will be a dedicated UW camera so no need to worry about how it functions out of the ocean. :-)

I use the Inon S2000 and just bought an new video light at DEMA to use as well.

I am also looking for a dedicated underwater camera. Total cost (camera & housing) is a significant consideration, but probably equally important is familiarity with the camera controls and menus. Experience with my wife's G10 on previous dive trips has taught me a bit about that. I do a lot of photography and use a Olympus EM-5 and bunch of lenses for my above water shooting. I did not go with a housing for the EM-5 because it is my main camera, which I do not want to risk being without if a housing floods, and the cost of a housing & port for the EM-5 were more expensive than I could justify for the two dive trips a year we do.

So, I bought a RX100 to be my new dive camera, but I am not so happy with it. As I do not use it often, I find it rather difficult to figure out the controls every time I pick it up. That does not bode well for under water situations. There are more negatives as well, the lens is slow at telephoto and the macro capability is not so great, and I like macro. One must have diopters for macro on the RX100, which increases cost. I am looking at the XZ-2, even though the sensor size and resolution are inferior, as it's menu system is very similar to the EM-5. For the infrequent times I use it, I am thinking that the familiarity with controls will be more valuable under water than outright resolution. Macro capability seems pretty good from various reviews, but the super macro capability is hampered by having no flash function at all. The olympus housing is really nice and very well thought out. having the front surface black to isolate the internal flash on a polycarbonate housing is something that other manufacturer's should be doing. I also like the control capability of the UFL-2 flash with the XZ-2, so that is a plus. So, I am ordering a XZ-2 and will see how that works for me in comparison with the RX100.

I am getting ready to sell my XZ-1 with the oly housing, spare o-ring, 5 batteries and external charger. I have only used it on 2 trips (June and October). If you change your mind about ordering the xz-2 let me know and maybe we can make a deal for my stuff. :-)

I only used it for underwater as I have a dedicated topside camera.

Ordered the XZ-2 already. I wanted several features on the XZ-2 so I was not interested in the XZ-1.

Cliff, if you are worried about flooding the em5, and that is the only reason for not housing it, get some good equipment insurance, such as from divers alert net, and you will be covered!

No reason to put up with a second rate, and different camera, when you have the one you love, already!

Good point, but the cost of replacement in case of a flood was not the issue with the EM-5, it was the risk of loosing the only camera body on a trip. I am mainly a landscape/nature photographer and am an occasional underwater photographer. If I am going on a trip to some exotic location that includes diving, then I want two cameras one for land and one underwater. I do not want some issue with the dive camera eliminating all photography on the trip.

I gave the idea of housing my EM-5 a lot of thought. The main issue is that it is an expensive option considering camera body, housing, and port costs. I dive once or twice a year, so I find it difficult to justify the costs to house the EM-5 versus saving that cash for a new lens (the Panasonic 150mm f2.8 to be released this year). that I will use more often above water. That is why I am going the route of the XZ-2. Some day if I move to a warmer location and find myself diving more frequently, then I might justify buying a better rig. But for now, it seems a good place to start and learn lighting and all the other things one needs to master.

I think it's a wise move as well. I travel with a dedicated land camera as I find it a lot easier to simply grab that camera and take it with me when not diving than to have to take my camera out of the housing throughout the day between dives when I'm not on the boat.

My approach was always the opposite to this then .... as soon as days diving over I would rinse off housing, dry it & then remove camera ..... never left in in housing so only need to take one camera on a holiday ........ difficalu enough keeping to baggae allowance as it is.

I do the same thing at t he end of the day... but during the day it's nice to have another camera to play with on land. I only like to open my housing during the day to change out the camera's battery.

OK....on my dive trips there is normally no land between dives, as I am on a dive boat.
If I want to take any airside snaps between dives, just take then with camera in housing.

Never done a live aboard, and for the next few trips will be going to Belieze, Figi and other locations where I want to do other photography as well as underwater. If I was on a live aboard, I would not be so concerned about other uses for the camera on the trip. However, I do not plan on doing that in the next few trips.
