Two novice questions.-----Can sTTL settings on a Z240 actually be even worth trying? I have a d800 with an optical cable for the housing. What flash settings would be the proper to use on the camera that would work well the Z20 strobe?

Hi,
sTTL on Inon strobes works very well for macro photography, but tends to struggle with wide-angle images.
So for macro, set your camera flash to TTL (setting e3) and the strobe to sTTL. You can adjust its output as required using the + or - settings.
For wide-angle, set you camera flash to manual, and set it to a fast shutter speed (e2). Set your strobe into manual and use the output dial to adjust the amount of output.
Of course, you can shoot manual in macro or TTL in wide-angle; this are just the way I do it.

i use 2 Z-240 on my Hugyfot D800 rig and often i use s-TTL with good results.
As Adam mentioned, s-TTL as most TTL work fine for macro but often get confused in WA pictures so a manual use
is more indicated for WA shots but even then s-ttl in WA gives often surprisingly good results.
