Here are some images of male Cardinal Fish from some of my local sites in Cockburn Sound, Western Australia.
The males incubate the eggs for a couple of weeks and then release them when they hatch.
Taken with my OMD EM-5 & 60mm macro lens and twin YS110A strobes which are snooted.
Unfortunately the vis isn't the best in the sites - on average around the 4m mark or less so it makes it a difficult day out.

We have them here in sydney too & i have never really paid them much attention until i was taking some photos with our new 7D & 60mm lens for practice.
They make a good subject because they don't move much & i noticed the eggs in there mouths.
So decided to start filming them with my panasonic HVX200 & now i am pretty hooked on them.
I caught some courting behaviour today that was cool to watch.
Do you know how long the eggs are held in there mouth?

Sorry for the late reply - I am not really sure how long they incubate the eggs for but it is about a week or two. Initially the eggs are a red colour but when they turn golden and you can see the eyes they are close to hatching. It's hard to measure because you never find the same fish in the same spot so every dive we are photographing a different fish. I think they release the hatchlings at night.
