Hmm, I’m absolutely shure that I posted a question a few days ago but it’s just gone…

But as I see there are no ID postings after the 11th of February so the forum seems to have lost some data.

Anyway…

I found this jellyfish in November 2012 in Mozambique.

It had about the size of a basketball and my investigations lead me to a Rhopilema sp.

Can anybody confirm, correct or maybe even specify it?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers

Wahrmut

Hi Wahrmut,

You are correct, it appears to be Rhopilema sp. Because there has been so little taxonomic work done on this genus it is difficult to assign a species, I'm guessing R. nomadica, but I do not know the differences between R. nomadica and R. hispidum and since there is no description from the Mozambique area it's possible that it is an undescribed species.

Cheers,

Wyatt

Hi Wyatt,

thanks a lot - I didn't expect an answer to my question anymore!

Even if it's not possible to make an exact ID it helps me a lot.

Cheers

Oops, I almost forgot...

I have two more unknown jellyfishes from this area.

Both of them were much smaller although I don't remember the exact size.

Do you have any ideas about the species?

Hey Wahrmut,

The second photo is of Pelagia sp. and third is Aequorea sp.
