We are trying to decide between two wonderful cover images, each submitted for the Ocean Views Photo contest (run as collaboration between Nature's Best magazine, Wetpixel, and Alert Diver).

Here are the shots, but the links are not live here.  You'd have to go to http://www.alertdiver.com to vote.

Lots of votes, and harp seal gobbled up the dugong. Thanks to all who shared their opinions.

To me, the orangey(?) color of background made that cover less appealing.

Keith Monroe.  Yes, terrific shot.  It would have been magic to be there for such an opportunity.

The colors we see on the web bear little true fidelity to the colors we achieve on press.  We do ink drawdowns and test against various PMS colors and UV coating.  Had the dugong won we would have gone through considerable further testing to find the right color for the background.  What you saw in the cover test is only an approximation of reality, had the test gone a different direction.  Black, on the other hand, is pretty easy to replicate properly.

Perhaps, to level the playing field, the images presented for voting should have the same color background.
