Here is another photo (one of many). The F5/F55 Gates housing seems to have a hypnotic effect on some people :)

Just post my blog for the ADEX 2013 show. Very bias as expected but shows some new and interesting gadgets. More detail on my not too bias 'mini' reviews soon.

Well here it is. After a three week waiting finally a Sony F55 to test fit Gates F55 housing.

I will just post a few pictures here. Full blog is in this link: http://www.scubacam....g/2013/05/3147/

F55 and Gates housing continued 1:   The top hung bracket is an interesting concept. I guess if the housing has a minor leak the camera at least has a fighting chance. The bracket is a little fiddly to push in to mesh the dovetail gooves. Part of the problem is that weight of the kitted out camera and also no guides to align it. I found fitted the whole thing up side down easier.   F55FrontGearing1.jpg F55FrontGearing3AllenKey.jpg F55Gates8InDome.jpg   I am also glad to find that the gear mechanism and system used in Epic/Scarlet or Red One still could be used here. The compactness of the housing has one disadvantage and that is space. I think normal allen (hex) key may have to be shorten to each some of these gearing assembles.    Or open up the front port flange. The gap looks a bit tight.

F55 and Gates housing continued 2:

F55SonyLong.jpg

The Sony F55 is fairly long when fully kitted with RAW recorder and the new  Sony BP FL75 battery. I guess the prototype given to me for test is meant for no RAW recorder. I am sure the final version would have to be a little longer.

F55Sonytoolong.jpg

F55No Rawrecorderfits.jpg

Without the RAW recorder the housing closes nicely.

F55 and Gates housing continued 3:

Raw Recorder.jpg

F55FrontGearing2.jpg

Compact.jpg

The combination is a heck of a nice system for 4K Raw or 2K RAW and HD footage. The camera pumps out friendly to use footage to cheaper media (compared to RED's SSD) to suit your work flow in post. The compactness and the weight will be a boon for travel. The Gates F55 is no bigger than the old Z1 housing. A bit longer may be with the RAW recorder. This system is one serious kit and if you have the cash then this is it. I can't wait for the finished version.

Cheers

David

That's the problem, 'having the cash' not only for the housing but for the airfare weight allowances.  Don't think it will fit into my carry on bag.

Hi Steve

Might not fit your particular bag but it will fit inside a cabin luggage. Weight is not too bad compared with housings for Epic/Scarlet.

Can't argue about the high cost but  after all it is a very high end professional kit.

10 kg

I weight it with the 8" dome & port cover on. No camera inside.

This is still an prototype so the final weight may vary. I don't think it will be much though.

Well I thought I might as well try the housing for size in a Think Tank Airport Acc V2. It just fits nicely. Not with the large 8' Dome though. That port is better in a Pelicase and protected with foam.

Part II:

Some more pictures of the Gates F55 in a Think Tank Bag......

ThktankF55Gates3.jpg

ThktankF55Gates4.jpg

10 kg of Gates housing on your back. Its not too bad. I even have room for a Mac Book Air.

Now I have to work out how to carry the camera. Now that's where your other half comes in handy....

cheers
