My wife and I are headed out to Tahiti next month.  We'll relax in Bora Bora for a week and then hit Rangiroa for some diving based a recommendation from my travel agent.

She told us the diving was best in Rangiroa(bettter than Bora Bora) I just wanted to get the wet pixel opinion on Bora Bora and Rangiroa for diving.  We'll be staying at the hotel Kia Ora on Rangiroa

I dove with THE SIX PASSENGERS in 2009.

Besides the fact that sometimes they squeeze more than 6 passengers in the skiffs, I do recommend them!

The diving in Rangiroa is fantastic...bring a reef hook for you own sanity!

Are shark encounters still regular in Rangiroa? Is shark fishing common place?

There is no shark fishing in French Polynesia. It's forbiden and applied since 2006. There never was much fishing before that anyway. That's why it is one of the last shark's eden !

However, you might need to know the right spots to make sure you see a lot of them !

I was just in Bora Bora for 10 days back in Feb. There had been a lemon shark attack right when we arrived so the dive companies mostly avoided the big lemon shark dive. We still saw plenty of life, and there is a great chance of seeing mantas. We dove with Topdive, and despite a few minor issues, they took real good care of us.

I have photos from the trip here.

And if you want some commentary here as well.

Have fun!

Rangiroa is great...used topdive with no issues. Lots of current in the passes.
