Found this small eel on a night dive at Blue Heron. I never saw the whole body but the head was about an inch long sticking out of the sand. Juvenile shorttail snake eel maybe?

thanks for any help!

Matt

Hi Matt,

This looks like a species of snake eel that is often referred to as a "Whip Eel" or "Sooty Eel." Most likely in the genus Bascanichthys.  I have seen them at BHB before, but they are apparently a rare find.  Doesn't seem like there's much information out there on this group of eels.
