This is not an ID post.

Some lionfish, especially Pterois volitans, exhibit swollen, globular growths above the eye, and below the supraocular tentacles. These 2 individuals are from the Lembeh Strait, Indonesia, and I have observed this occasionally in the Andaman Sea too. Does anyone know what causes these growths and if they have any purpose?
