Here is one my favorites from reasonably local dive site of Byron Bay. It is of the summer time visitors a Leopard Shark (or Zebra).

It looks like a Zebra shark to me. The Zebra shark (Stegostoma fasciatum) is a carpet shark, related to wobbegongs and, curiously, to whale sharks. The Leopard shark (Triakis semifasciatum) is a houndshark, and looks rather like (more confusion) a dogfish, or as we should say, a catshark...

Tim, unfortunately, local names get very confusing.  In CA, we call the T Semifasciatum the Leopard Shark, but in "Asiatralia" (sorry ozzies, couldn't help it! ;)), the "Leopard" shark is a common name for the S. Fasciatum.  At least it's not like the C. Taurus, which has different names on different continents! :)

Mines from Orimas thila in Noonu atoll in the Maldives. Was hoping for some in your face shark action but the current wasn't running fast enough so ended up spending some time on 'plan B'

Great stuff on here. In some trepidation I'll add a couple of my own - a wide angle of bumphead parrotfish and a macro of a prickly leatherjacket. Never seen the latter before and I think he is pretty photogenic.

I anxiously await this thread every year...it is so full of treasures.  So hard to choose...but here are my top two favorites.   Both of these were taken during Digital Madness in Grand Cayman.

I love jawfish and catching this yawn was especially fun.

This was my first outing with silversides and also photographing freedivers.

Apologies for really breaking the rules here...elsewhere I have been doing a 12 Days of Christmas meets Advent Calendar posting, revealing a new door each day...so rather than make Wetpixelers sit through the 12 doors again, I'm showing the first and last calendars. Here goes:-

2013AdventCalendar0.jpg

And now for all the doors opened:-

2013AdventCalendar12.jpg

1. The model Ivory Flame. Shot in a swimming pool.

2. Sunset over Brough Sound, Orkney.

3. Westland Wessex XS122 in NDAC, UK.

4. Alvis Stalwart in NDAC

5. Aquaman Cometh. Vobster Quay, UK. An image from this shoot now graces the front cover of this month's Canadian Diver magazine.

6. SMS Coln. Scapa Flow, Orkney.

7. Underwater iPhone with bubbles. Vobster Quay, UK.

8. HMS Scylla. Cornwall, UK.

9. Forward guns, SMS Karlsruhe. Scapa Flow, Orkney.

10. Bows of HMS Scylla. Cornwall, UK.

11. Ivory Flame again.

12. Fellow photographer Tony 'Goose' Neal. Tattoo based on an image by Alex Mustard. Inking of the tattoo by Kirsty Peake.

Just 36 dives this year. Would have been more, but a broken collarbone kept me out of the water for a bit...

my favorite wide angle and macro shot of 2013- both from Palau- the wide angle is self explanatory, the macro is clownfish eggs nearing time to hatch- merry, merry to you all and good shooting in 2014

2013 started out with two weeks in Palau followed by significant photographic surface intervals and then 3 weeks in the Phillipines. Lots of opportunities to shoot in unusual environments such as the Pantanal in Brazil and Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The shot on Jellyfish Lake is one of my favourites.

This first one was my favorites as I've been trying to capture this behavior all summer and finally got it.  Sarcastic Fringehead showing off for his lady friend in La Jolla, California.

DSC_1919-Edit-L.jpg

This second one while not my best picture it was a lot of fun and reminds me of the very playful sea lions in La Paz, Baja California, Mexico.

12. Fellow photographer Tony 'Goose' Neal. Tattoo based on an image by Alex Mustard. Inking of the tattoo by Kirsty Peake.

I think the Goose's pain was worth it: it's nice to see his back not in the flesh, as it were...

... even if there's a suspicious similarity of Alex's image to one of mine!
