I am curious:

Will the new Panasonic GH4 fit in the Nauticam na-gh3 housing?

Does Nauticam already know?

Or somebody else?

I personally think it's gonna fit.

The only major difference is the size (height) of the control dial and it's locking button. Everything else is exactly the same.

Looking at my GH3 and NA-GH3 this morning there is plenty of room (as the dial on the housing goes up/down) for the slightly larger dial. The only issue will be if the lock button will work or interfere when you try and adjust the mode via the housings push down dial

If the new locking button on the MODE dial interferes with the housing operation it should be a minor detail to fix for Nauticam.

Are you guys planing to upgrade to the GH4?

Yes I'm planning too - even for the improved 10bit 1080p at 4:4:4 - I bet the low light has been improved too.

Further to this, it has emerged that the HDMI socket on the GH4 is now MICRO HDMI - not MINI - so if you are using (like me) an external recorder - you will need different HDMI cables

Cannot believe no one from ReefPhoto or any of the big UW camera outfits, out there haven't had a GH4 in their hands and seen if the NA-GH3 fits.

There appears to be a lot of GH4 out in the wild now - even with ISO comparisons, video examples etc with the GH3. Panasonic are obviously happy with people playing (and releasing)  images/videos captured with current pre-release firmware.

http://www.slrlounge...-gh3-comparison  as an example.

According to the Panasonic USAs rep talking to the guys at Zacuto the improvement is sensitivity is only about 1/3 stop in the real world (marketing material makes claims almost a full stop improvement). However the venus engine is also improved so video at higher ISOs should become much cleaner looking nevertheless thanks to better noise reduction on the sensor read out data. But for a massive light sensitivety improvement you will need to wait for future cameras with the pending organic sensor technology, Gh5 or GH6 perhaps. ;-)

Also from the Zacuto interview; on the GH4 you could get real "video" settings like "dB gain" and "shutter angle" in the menu system instead of the DSLR orientated "ISO" and "shutter speed" controls. This makes the gH4 an even more video orientated camera than ever before.

If it fits, that would be close to first in the history of UW photography.

It's more or less a first for a higher level camera to use the same physical size and button layout as the predecessor. But why change a winning formula...

Have a look at the EOSHD website also, at their low light review of the GH4 - it looks really promising!!

As per the above side by side... to me they have the NR on the GH3 turn up too much (or its preset level is too high) - the GH3 shouldn't 'mud' the details like that - but should have more noise.

I see the preorders taking months to fill.... gonna sell like hot cakes! :(

I think this is a little premature...from my quick test at NAB with a pre-production camera, I saw that there was an issue with the mode dial being too tall, and it will need to be looked at once we get a production camera. All of the other controls seemed to work well with the pre-production camera I was able to try. It seems likely that we can offer a little retrofit kit to make it work. The Panasonic rep told me cameras should start arriving in the US around the end of April. We will be keen to get our hands on one and get a solution out asap.

Chris

NA-GH3 Upgrade kits for gaining use of the command dial with the GH4 are now with Nauticam dealers.

Expecting my upgrade kit end of next week. Will report back with how it does

Cool!! Looks more than just the rubber pad - is it the holder also?

Any chance you can scan / take picture of the instructions?

Nice!

Hi,

Out of the curiosity... (sorry if that has been asked, looked around but couldn't find anything)...would something similar work on GH2 housing? i.e. to accommodate gh3 or 4 ?

Thanks!
