About Me
I began diving and photographing underwater while a full-time student, in 1968. I started selling images as a semi-professional photographer in 1981 and have been a full-time professional photographer and writer since 2005.
My photographs have appeared in most diver-oriented publications in North America, as well as others in Europe and Australasia. My work has also appeared in many general interest and nature-oriented publications, such as National Geographic, Smithsonian, Time, Natural History, National Wildlife, Audubon, Sierra, BBC Wildlife, Terre Sauvage, Geo and Der Spiegel. I am the author or co-author of ten educational books for children (Scholastic's Undersea Encounters series) and of the large format photographic book, Beneath Cold Seas: The Underwater Wilderness of the Pacific Northwest ( www.beneathcoldseas.com )
I earned a B.S. in Zoology with additional post-graduate work, and have received an award from the International Institute for Species Exploration for research involving Histiophryne psychedelica (the "psychedelic frogfish") and for co-authoring the paper describing this amazing antennarid, named one of the ten most significant new species described in 2009.
I have entered contests from time to time, and have been fortunate to win a number of awards, including three first place prizes in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, first place prizes in the Sierra magazine and Nature's Best competitions, a third place finish in the Festival Mondial de l'Image Sous-marine and a Best of Show in the Northern California Photographic Society annual competition.
While aging faster these days (I'm now in my 60's), I remain a reasonably active diver and am currently working on another book project. I continue to dive in both tropical and cold water, and in the last 6-7 years have done most of my shooting in Indonesia and British Columbia. Many examples of my work can be seen at my primary website, www.seaphotos.com
