PS CS3 can only use up to 3 gb of memory, you can get better performance by having faster hard drives for cache and files. processor upgrade and new gpu won't have much of an effect. (CS3 on my 8 core mac can use all of 1 core...)

PS CS5 is an 64 bit app so it can use more memory and can also utilize gpu for some things.
