Egypt with D800

17 December 2012 - 06:20 AM

First week of December I was on a great liveaboard on the red sea. A mix of technical and recreational divers visiting deep wrecks and beautiful reefs

Meeting thresher sharks at big brother for example:

Wide angle zooms for Nikon D800

19 June 2012 - 01:13 AM

yesterday I was looking into the wide angle zoom lenses that will fit the D800
I came to a list of these 7 lenses with their field of view

Nikkor AF-S 14-24mm F2.8 G ED Nano 114 - 84
Nikkor AF-S 16-35mm F4.0 G ED VR Nano 107 - 63
Tokina 16-28mm F2.8 AT-X PRO FX Nikon 107 - 77
Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 II DG HSM 122 - 84
Sigma 15-30mm F3.5-4.5 EX DG ASPHERICAL 110 - 72
Nikkor AF 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 IF-ED D 100 - 62
Nikkor AF-S 17-35mm F/2.8 D IF-ED 104 - 62

They all seem to to have some pro's and con's (weight, price, field of view, build, aperture)

For a swim-around lens I think the Nikkor 16-35 f4 would be my top choice at the moment. The 35mm end gives you some zoom options for smaller subjects, F4 is reasonably fast, weight is 685 grams.

Curious what people are using for zoom lenses on their Nikon full frame and if they would buy the sam lens again

Using the self timer

On a solo dive in a really boring lake nearby I had an hour of fun experimenting with my camera's self timer

So here's me as a photographer AND model

New directory for Underwater photographers

10 May 2012 - 10:27 AM

While searching the web for directories that link to underwater photographer websites, I did not find much useful websites.
Some old, unmaintained stuff, or way too general collections of links.

Therefor I decided today to create a subdomain on my site to allow all UW photographers to post links to their sites.
Hoping to build a nice collection of worldwide links to all your portfolios.

I'll be manually approving all submissions, so your link won't end up between a bunch of garbage pointing to online casino's and drugs sites.

Fisheye and Macro lens for D800 advice

08 May 2012 - 03:51 AM

I'm going to upgrade from my sony a350 / ikelite kit to Nikon D800 / Hugyfot

Since this will be my first nikon camera I'd like to get some advice on which lenses to get.

I'd like to start with a fisheye and 60mm macro lens, since those are the ones I'm used to on Sony

For fisheye there's the Nikon 16mm f2.8 and the Sigma 15mm f2.8
Sigma is slightly cheaper and has closest focus of 15 cm versus 25 for the Nikon

For the macro I see the
Nikkor AF-S 60mm F/2.8 G Micro ED
Nikkor AF-D 60mm f/2.8 Micro
similar in pricing, both 1:1, one being just smaller than the other

there's also the Sigma 50mm F2.8 EX DG Macro

any thoughts on the best combination?
