#343207 Mugged by a Giant Octopus

Posted by gecko1 on 11 February 2014 - 01:48 PM

Fantastic dive sunday with my buddy Rob. We sat 4 Giant Pacific Octopus at Point Lobos State Reserve in Carmel, CA. One of them was quite interactive.

#340603 Your Favourite/Best Image of 2013

Posted by gecko1 on 13 December 2013 - 04:00 PM

2013 got off to a bang for me photographically and after January I was pretty sure I knew what my entry this year would be. If you dive long enough eventually a whale will swim right in front of you when you least expect it. Fortunately I still had the camera out and was able to get a shot.

My dive buddy Allison tells the story better than I ever could here: http://coldwaterkitt...3/01/whale.html

Of course it wouldn't be this thread if I didn't feel tempted to cheat a bit and post a second image. The other big event for me this year was finally getting to dive at Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary. It's deep, offshore and a total pain in the neck logistically. But it's also insanely beautiful. It's an amazing thing when something you've dreamed about actually ends up meeting your expectations. (Kudos to Matt V and Jim C for making this happen).

Happy Holidays all! Can't wait to see the rest of the thread.

#338497 Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary

Posted by gecko1 on 22 October 2013 - 01:22 PM

In October, 2013, Bay Area Underwater Explorers (http://www.baue.org), in collaboration with NOAA, mounted a weeklong dive expedition to Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary off of the dive boat Escapade.

We visited Craine's Point and the Northern East and Northern West Ridges. The water was so thick with fish that they limited the visibility. The structure was completely covered by a variety of colorful sponges and anemones, and dotted with smaller fish including many young rosy and yelloweye rockfish.

The expedition would not have been possible without the support of NOAA, the Bodega Bay Marine Laboratory, Any Water Sports, and the crew of the Escapade.

Here are some images from the expedition. It was an amazing privilege to dive such a healthy, beautiful and unspoiled reef.
