Do you think it would be possible to sand of a millimeter or so, so the flash could fire? In the photo it seems very close to the point where the flash would be open enough to be able to fire. Or would a millimeter sanded off of a small area compromise the proper functioning of the housing (i.e. no flooding)?

No, it only goes up about 2mm.  Meaning, it's still about at least an inch (the entire height of the flash) from going up.

I am off to the Maldives in 2 weeks so I do hope that they are a year round visitor! I note from their webpage that there is a concern over unrelated dive boats; I shall be on Filitheyo and diving with Werner Lau - I hope that as a permie dive center they will be aware of the issues....

You may want to ping the team via e-mail - they go to other islands to do chats and talk about the research they are doing.

The group publishes a bit of a qiuck guide for how far to stay from the shale sharks, as well as the boat speeds that the operators should use in the area dependent on the distance from the shark and/or area.

Indeed, I used the 10-22 exclusively underwater for a trip I just back from in the Maldives/Bali.  While I had intended to also use the 17-40, I stupidly forgot the slightly different sized gear ring at home.  Doh!

I love the 10-22 though.  This was my first time with the 7D in the Ikelite case underwater (aside from pool tests), so I'm still getting used to it.  I posted a trip report in that forum, but it all links to here:

Everything taken 7D on 10-22 all mostly auto with a DS-51.  HD video was taken at 1080p and then downconverted to 720p.

Unfortunately doesn't seem to work. Housing itself is fairly tight and the through-case attachment for the focus light penetrates right there adding another couple millimeters. Flash didn't seem to be triggering this far closed.

Yup, just confirmed the same thing (funny, also took nearly the same pictures of it).  Also note that when this occurs (the flash going partially up), the camera is no longer usable due to an error message.  It also attempts to pop it up three times before giving it up and generating the error message.

Hi Ray,

Since you have the new 7D Ikelite housing in your posession, can you report if the Ikelite housing will allow the 7D flash to be open just partially (when installed inside the housing) and allow the flash to be triggered? Thanks for any info on this.
