8" Ikelite dome on Nauticam GH4 housing modification

08 March 2015 - 01:13 AM

For split level shots, there seems to be no large dome option for my Nauticam GH4 with Panasonic 8mm fisheye.

I take over unders with my 4.3" dome but wanted to have a play with something larger, so I decided to make my own.

I found a second hand Ikelite 8" dome, and a Ikelite super wide port body for $150AU ( good deal! )

I sanded the Ikelite body port to fit onto a Nauticam 3.5" mini dome, I used aqua polymer knead glue to attach them together. The 8" dome screws onto this, using the original ikelite o-ring.

So there are now 2 domes the lens shoots through, which might affect image quality slightly, but not noticeable.

I used two brackets attaching the heavy dome securely to the housing for extra strength.

And it works, image quality is great, no chromatic aberration or negative effects at all.

Split image is straight from the camera, showing minimal vignetting.

Cheers, Xander

Ambon muck with 8mm wide angle (GH4 CFWA)

26 December 2014 - 11:53 PM

Hi everyone,

I spent a week in Ambon and did most of my diving with wide angle lens.

Here are some of the keepers, equipment used:

GH4, Nauticam housing, 2x INON S2000, 8mm Fisheye and Nauticam 3.5" mini dome.

Most photos are snooted, some are cropped slightly.

Cheers!

Xander

GH4 stills

24 October 2014 - 11:41 PM

Photos taken on snorkel in Western Australia all in max 2 meters of water in the Swan river/estuary here.

GH4 in Nauticam housing, with the 8mm FE in Nauticam 3.5" dome and the Olympus macro 60mm in Nauticam macro port 65.

I heard the 8mm in 3.5" mini dome would vignet slightly, but it does not.

One handle removed from housing and Single INON S2000.

Some minor PS tweaks/sharpening, slight crop on a few of the photos.

Nauticam housing is very good to use, both lenses are great as well.

I am finding quite some pink/green artefacts in my photos, also in low ISO, especially in smooth gradients of backgrounds.

Not sure if the GH4 has difficulty with that or if I might have to tweak some of my settings. This was something I did not notice that much in my old RX100 photos.

For the rest the GH4 in Nauticam is awesome to use.

Macro: I think the RX100 might often be sharper when you see 100% detail, but a lot less versatile than GH4 with dedicated macro lens.
