Unfortunately I didn't write down the serial numbers before sending them off. I assumed they were part of the dodgy lot because they didn't work.

I had exactly the same issue, but only when trying to use TTL. After someone suggested shooting in manual at all times the red/green flashing went away and the strobes would last for a few dives (they were generally fine for 3 or 4 dives per day). It didn't solve the defect, but at least I could continue shooting. I was told that the strobes needed a firmware update and am currently waiting for them to come back from S&S.

I'm by no means experienced, but I've always figured I should try to do my best with whatever equipment I had with me at the time. When I last went diving my fisheye port hadn't arrived so the best I had for wide angle was the 12-50mm. Sure there are some limitations, but I still managed a few images that I thought came out ok. That I could also take some photos of smaller creatures was an added bonus.
