WTB: Subtronic Nova/pro270

I am looking for one of these giants. Optical ttl is an advantage. Must be shipped to Germany or Switzerland.

Ultrashort nikonos cable/female adapter for HW optical converter?

24 December 2015 - 01:52 PM

I would like to try the Heinrichs Weikamp optical converter on a subtronic nova. First problem: how to connect the converter if I want to use fiber cables? Is there a light/very short nikonos cable or a female adapter to match the converter with the strobe?

German uwpix forum down?

Anybody following the German UWPIX forum? It seems to be vanished from cyberspace...

Underwater Guide number?

09 December 2015 - 04:05 AM

There are very different views on the gudie number values underwater: some use a factor of 2, some even 4(!) to estimate underwater GN from land values.

Which is correct for clean blue seawater or 50m vis pool? I suppose color temperature also has a significant effect here, the 4200-4800K strobes getting punished for their nice warm light...

E.g how do the inon z240's compare to the subtronic novas in terms of underwater working distance? (iso, f-stop being the same)

Coverage might be the cause of confusion here, "flat port" strobes, like the inons, squeeze their beam underwater, e.g. the 100°-s of the z240 becomes 70°, approximately doubling the power/surface ratio.

I guess a factor of 2 is sufficient for "squeezed angle" strobes, factors of 3+are for dome-port units, like the subtronics, seacam.

Weaker+stronger strobe in pair?

08 December 2015 - 11:11 AM

I was wondering, does anyone use strobes with different power in pairs? (coverage, CT the same)

I am about to buy a venerable Subtronic Nova - which is the third most powerful light known to me underwater (2nd being its successor pro270, first Baker) which I might pair with a Subtronic Maxi.

GN's underwater: 20+16, other characteristics match.

If I am right with the formula, I should expect GN 25.6 total (2 novas would result 28), worse case the "maxi side" of the objects ~2-3 stops shadows - which is unlikely to prevail, because where shadows are visible (macro+other close-by stuff) both strobes would operate at very low power settings.
