The D800 focus system is great !!!

The high resolution harm severely the contrast and it looks some times as not  sharp enough.

Adding  contrast and sharpening is essential !!!

All together, I find the D800 a good camera but more difficult to handle than my old D700.

The Sigma 15, Nikon 60 and Nikon 105 vr are really good on it as John says.

I'm sure the D4 will be much easier to handle !

I use the Mdx800 with Ikelite 161 on Manuel and like it.

Never thought to use a TTL, so, can't help you on that.

You need to think over about lenses and ports. My experience with the Nikon 16-35 VR with the 240 dome port , is not good, for example.

Haven't got my D800E housing yet, but, I do own the 16-35/4 and know it very well from above water photography and from using it on my D7000 underwater.
I"ve replaced it from my 14-24 2.8 which I"ve found the best wide angle lens,  but a very heavy with short zoom range.
I"ve found the 16-35 very sharp in the center, even at F/4 but soft on the edges and with distortion on the sides on my D700.
Stoping down a bit, the edges are very sharp too and as a miracle, on the D800, the distortion disappears !!!
The lens is fast,accurate and has no problems in low light conditions.
It focuses at around 28 cm'/11.02"
I love the lense and going to use it with my Sigma 15 FISHEYE.

My impressions from the D7000, are completely different. It's a good camera apart for the most important thing, the A/F.   After using 2 bodies (probably from earlier serials) and throwing away 95% of the pics that were out of focus, I"ve decided to switch for the D800.   I think there ia an argument around the D7000 A/F system on the net - some say it suffers from B/F and F/F problems and you have to calibrate calibrate each lens with the body and some sayes it's ok.
