Manta Video with Sony RX100

Returned several weeks ago from an amazing trip to Misool Eco Resort armed with my tiny Sony RX100 and Nauticam housing. I love this combination and my only regret was spending money on a macro dioper and strobe and not a wide angle diopter and the latest Light and Motion video lamps. That not withstanding I captured some pretty reasonable footage (IMHO)

Take a look at this sample of mantas captured on Misool's famous 'Magic Mountain'

Original format AVCHD 1920x1080p 50fps, subsequently converted to Apple ProRes and edited in FCP. No post production colour editing.

RX100 AVCHD conversion

20 January 2013 - 10:07 PM

I'm a bit rusty on all this having been out of the video editing game for a couple of years.

I want to edit my HD video simply in Final Cut Pro and for my purposes can choose between:

1) Apple Intermediate Code (AIC) or
2) Apple Pro Res 422 HQ (or just Apple Pro Res 422)

... both 'native' Apple codecs that need no time consuming pre-rendering in FCP.

I will show the edited HD video at full res directly from harddisk to a 1920x1080 TV screen, and also burn STD DVD disks (maybe later BluRay). I'll also no doubt render some 640x360 H.264 for posting online etc

What compressor format should I use and why?

Cheers!

RX100 Video White Balance

17 January 2013 - 06:24 PM

I just took possesion of my new RX100 and Nauticam housing. Boy, incredible the engineering advances in the last couple of years while I was looking the other way!

Question: although I can adjust (and set) White Balance for stills on the RX100, I can't find anything about video WB. Certainly not in the menus or web searches.

Has anyone found a way to set WB for video - or does it keep the still settings? Should I get a red filter for video (when not using lamps), or if I set WB (assuming it is possible) on a white/pink board will that suffice?

Sony RX100 AVCHD Import into Final Cut Pro 6.0.6

14 January 2013 - 02:08 PM

[I posted this earlier in techniques and tips - I guess it should be here under video - apologies]

Anyone had experience importing RX100 AVCHD Video into FCP 6.0.6? I don't think it can be done directly, especially as I'm still on a non Intel Quad and MacOS 10.5.8.

I guess I will need a converter, but it my favorite - mpeg streamclip, using 1.9.2 - does not mention AVCHD in its help files.

I don't actually have the RX100 in my eager hands at the moment, but am trying to prepare in advance.

Any suggestions?

Cheers, Nick
