Nice review Stuart. I've also been playing with the light in the Maldives, but didnt get as much chance as I'd hoped I would to use it. I will post some samples when I'm back home in a couple of weeks.
In the meantime I wonder if this review might get more of an audience in the Video equipment section- Drew?
Here's a bit more of the ML Raw footage from a recent photography workshop if anyone's interested. Some of the topside is standard H264, all the underwater, except the last shot (gopro) is with ML. There are a couple of shots with the digital zoom- the anemone fish and the coral closeup with fish- the wide at 01:13 was shot at 17mm, the closeup that follows it was shot from exactly the same spot, but at 40mm with the 3x digital zoom applied.
Anyway link here:
That is the 720p version. If you click through to my vimeo videos, the 1080p version is also there (better quality if you have a fast connection)
Not sure how rigorous it was, but may give you an idea.
Like Drew I've also been playing with ML on the Mark III. Just done another trip with it. Will post more results. One thing I've found is it's pretty sensitive to getting the exposure right. Dark areas get noisy pretty quickly if you have to bring them up. You're better off pushing the histogram as far to the right as you can. But overall I'm pretty happy with results. Digital zoom seems to work well too. My 17-40 now has macro capabilities!
Just finished shooting a job in Oman, so thought it was time to update the Demo Reel with some new material. If anyone's got the time (it's only 3 minutes!), I'm looking for comments and suggestions on the edit. Is the music OK? Any shots need to be taken out?
As ever the quality suffered a bit with the web compression, and I also feel like it might have crushed the blacks a bit when I rendered, but I'm having difficulty with editing on a laptop and external monitor which don't seem to want to talk to the screen calibration software nicely, so each screen looks different.
Anyway, feedback appreciated.
Here it is:
Edit: Just replacing it with a newer version which takes into account Drew's comments below, so there may be a period when the HD version isn't up (also just noticed the dolphins still need a bit more trimming at the start of the clip!)
