Topics I've Started

A Near Diaster!

06 May 2013 - 05:28 PM

Last November, I purchased on-line tickets from Sing Air by credit card.

In December, I closed the card account and opened another account with a different bank.

The closed account cards were destroyed.

Last month at check in at LAX, I was asked for my credit card.

My new card's numbers did not match the one used to purchase the tickets (No Shit!)

Although Sing Air confirmed they had been paid and had no problems with any thing else, they would not board me unless I produced the card from the closed account.

After about a hour, we called Visa and they verified to the Sing Air Station Manager the purchase.

It would not do.

We had to have the October account statement faxed to the airport and handed to the Manager.

The four other ticketed people traveling with us were not asked for their credit card.

Sing Air said, the computer randomly selects candidates!

Lesson learned!

Subal Moisture Alarm Repair

03 May 2013 - 12:31 PM

Subal alarms are well known for not shutting off even when dried.  The problem is some moisture is sucked up into the small rubber boot and even when dried, crystalized salt water will carry enough current to activate the alarm for days on end.

Here is my solution to this problem.

1. Gently pry the two prong contact head off the housing.  No need to remove the circuit board.

2. Carefully cut through just the rubber prong boot and pull it off the head.

3. Brush off the contact head until you can insert the battery with out activating the alarm.

4. Test functionality by shorting prongs with wet finger.

5. If good, cover the head with heat shrink tubing, or if in the field several wraps of tape will work.

6. Glue or temporarily tape prong head in original location. A temporary thin shim will help keep the prongs close to, but off the housing body.

I used clear silicone glue for this when I got home.

Lembeh Straits; Rhinopeaus

28 April 2013 - 04:52 PM

On the way home from Lembeh.
We dive here on a yearly basis and have not seen any Rhinos for a few years.
The guides say none for last three years.
Any one seen any more recently here?

"Dive The World" Magazine

26 February 2013 - 11:41 PM

Any one know if this magazine is still alive?

We sent a subscription in early December, US$85.00, and have yet to receive a magazine.

Numerous EMails to various mast head address have failed to be returned.

Bokeh???

05 January 2013 - 10:20 PM

Is it possible to achieve a 'bokeh' background when shooting video underwater?
Any one have a sample clip?
