Who is up for some more winter diving?
Join NCUPS for a fun day at San Carlos Beach. San Carlos Beach is a great place to hang out with friends, dive a few dives along Breakwater Wall in hopes to be buzzed by a friendly sea loin or two. Or, you might instead choose to head out to the Metridium Fields to surround yourself in plumes of fluffy white metridium anemones.
Where we will dive: Divers can choose to dive the Breakwater Wall or Metridium Fields.
Additional Dive Info: We’ll have a picnic lunch on the lawn, weather permitting. Bring your own lunch, something to sit on and any snacks you wish to share.
Location: Coast Guard Pier. Foam St. and Cannery Row, Monterey.
Parking: pay parking (recommend purchasing an all-day)
Experience Level: Novice to advance depending on how far out you choose to swim.

Derek Emmett will present photo and video collected at three diverse locations.
Alaska: Aboard the Nautilus Swell, on a Backscatter trip, we will see cold water diving at its best! Alaska diving is like Monterey on steroids. Covering 1000 nautical miles, and 14 days of diving, we will truly see that the last frontier still exists!
Cocos: With the beautiful backdrop of Costa Rica, followed by a 36 hour boat ride out to Cocos, how can you go wrong? Incredible and exciting shark diving aboard the Undersea Hunter, but wait, we meet with the Argo to provide us a submarine divetoo!
Indonesia: Indonesia is a must do destination, and you could spend years going through it. Great people, great food, and unbelievable diving! It will take 5 flights to reach Sorong, but then we board Kararu’s Cheng Ho, for a 12 day trip through Raja Ampat and Missol! Beautiful abundant life and some of the loveliest corals in the world!
About Derek:
Derek was born in San Francisco, and raised in the Monterey-Pacific Grove area. At the age of nine, Derek taught himself to snorkel at Lover’s Point. Watching divers going out every weekend, he put his first snorkel set together from gear that washed up on the shore. Derek loved to be by the sea and watching “Adventures of Jacques Cousteau”. He spent his younger days dreaming of the day that he would become a diver, but settled, in time being, working and stealing time on the glass bottom boat in PG. However, it was not until much later that Derek finally found his home in the ocean.
Derek has always enjoyed land photography, even doing his own black and white film development for the high school year book. It was not until 2003 that he found his first digital underwater camera, which was the Olympus C5050. At that point he found great a love and challenge with underwater photography, and his life has not been the same since. Derek spends a lot of time diving Monterey, and has dove around the Caribbean, Great Barrier Reef, Galapagos, Cocos, Maldives, Raja Ampat, Komodo, Bali, Molokai, and Alaska. Derek has lived in Livermore since 1997, he has three children, and professionally is an Electrical Engineer. Currently he is the Director of Engineering at Optimum Design in Pleasanton, and for fun teaches Scuba at Sport Chalet in Pleasanton. You can find Derek teaching on the shores of Breakwater, and taking his students into Backscatter to show them his love of underwater photography!
