Which uw setup to buy Canon G11 or S90?

23 June 2010 - 12:17 AM

Hello everyone,
I'm so undecided which uw set up to buy. I already bought the Canon G11 and I love the camera topside so far. The low light photos with this camera are amazing! I also like the 5X zoom over the 3.7X of the S90. As well the G11 feels nicer in the hands. I was just about to buy the Fix G11 housing, Inon z-240 strobe, the Fix wide angle fish eye lens and macro lens, but then spoke with Ryan at Reef photo and he's talking me into going the S90 route with Fix housing. He's telling me its a better uw camera, faster, and I do like the fact I can change lenses uw with the S90 setup. This really sounds nice to be able to change lenses uw rather then be stuck with the wide angle, standard port, or macro lens for the whole dive. Really this is the only factor making me think of going the S90 route and the fact its a smaller housing.
I also read the Backscatter P&S guide http://www.backscatt...om/learn/articl ... .php?ID=80 and it says the G11 is the best P&S camera as well the best image quality they have ever seen in a P&S. Yet both of these cameras are using the same image sensor, so doesn't this mean the photo quality is going to be the same? And what about video quality, are they equal on these cameras? Its really not that big of a deal for me to buy an S90 and build my UW setup with this, and keep my G11 for topside fun, I just want to be sure I pick the right camera before investing in the expensive housings and lenses.

Anyone out there have both of these cameras or used them both enough to help me with this?

Questions on G11 and which strobes to buy

17 June 2010 - 04:36 PM

Hello everyone,
I've been reading these forums this past week and I decided to buy the Canon G11. I've been using other Canon P&S's for the past 4 years with the oem houseing and a small Sea & Sea strobe, but now I'm ready to move up and take my hobby to the next level.

After reading the Point & Shoot out on Backscatter, http://www.backscatt...ticle.php?ID=80 I took their suggestions as well, but it was a tough decision between the Canon G11 and S90. Both excellent cameras but decided on the G11 for now and maybe the S90 later as well.

So I'm going to buy the Fisheye Fix G11 housing mostly because of the size factor. Although I'm a little disappointed that I can not change lenses underwater, but I'll get used to it. Now the question is which strobes to buy. The Inon Z240 is what the article suggests, but the Inon D-2000 looks really nice as well. I was thinking to buy 1 strobe for now, then add a 2nd strobe later. Most importantly is size and traveling light for now as I'm living in Arizona and I have to fly to all my dive destination. Although I'm planning on moving to Florida within 1 to 2 years so then perhaps I can move up to a SLR later.

I was also thinking of buying the Fisheye UWL-04 wide lens as well as the Fisheye element flip macro lens. Anyone else here using this macro lens? Is this a good option for this housing?

Also what is the best tray and arms to buy, seems like a lot of divers on this board like the ULCS brand?

I've also been entertaining the idea of having my G11 and perhaps one of those Flip HD's video cameras on the same tray arm, perhaps 1 strobe for photos and 1 video light for movies. I hate the fact the G11 doesn't have HD video on it but hopefully that feature will come about in a compact size in the next year or two.
What are you guys thoughts on a setup like that? Or is the video on the G11 pretty good underwater?

Thanks

Any good books on G11 and uw photography

17 June 2010 - 04:17 PM

Hello,
I remember seeing some posts somewhere talking about some good books on the G11 beyond what the oem manual gives. I just bought the G11 and I was hoping to find a good book on it, specifically for uw photography. Any suggestions?

Thanks
