In Topic: Lens / Port choices for the Canon 5D

19 July 2007 - 06:57 PM

Thanks guys! Never thought switching to an SLR would be so complicated...and I haven't even bought the housing / strobes / ports yet!

I think for now I'll go ahead and get the 15mm fisheye, the 50mm sigma macro and the 100mm canon macro.

Still on the fence about whether or not to get a zoom lens, in which case I would probably get the Canon 24-85mm USM (this one should fit!).

Herb, the CFWA shots look awesome, but I'll stick to the FE to start!

Again, thanks!

Thanks James!

I am glad to hear I would be able to use the 50mm sigma in the 100mm Canon macro port.

What are your views on the 50mm sigma vs the 24-70mm zoom for the 5D as a work-horse lens, if you had to choose one?

Also, when you are using a zoom lens in the housing, you have to choose which zoom to set it to ahead of time and lock it, right?

Thanks guys for your replies and advice!

One more question, I am pretty set on the 15mm Sigma Fisheye and the 100mm macro Canon. However, if I were to skip the 50mm Sigma for now, which lens would you recommend that I get as a lens for "everyday" shooting?

Alcina over at Scubaboard likes to use the Sigma 17-70mm for days when she "doesn't know what she is going to encounter." Any recommendation / opinions?

In Topic: Anti shark-finning petition (Alibaba.com)

17 March 2007 - 12:15 AM

As a complement to the growing online petition requesting Alibaba.com to stop distributing shark fins in their website (2430 signatures and counting!),

we have also recently embarked on a mass e-mailing campaign directed at the CEO and public relations officers of Alibaba.com. To this end, we have constructed a template email containing detailed information about the practice and ecological consequences of shark finning as well as a direct link to the online petition site for the company to view. We are aiming to use the power of our growing number of signatures to make this company immediately aware of the fact that a large (and increasing) number of people around the world are learning about their current irresponsible business practice and the impact that their actions are having on our world's shark populations and marine ecosystems. We hope that the combination of these actions will prompt Alibaba.com to take immediate steps to correct this situation and remove shark fins from their product list, as Amazon.com did 2 months ago.

You can find the content of the template e-mail here:

We kindly urge you to take 5 minutes of your time to read this template, and then copy and paste it, sign your name at the bottom, and send it to the two public relations officers at Alibaba.com: Christina Splinder and Bruce Shu (their e-mail addresses are listed in the online document above).
