This is not exactly a dive story, and I don't know all the details involved. I'm posting here because I don't know where else to put it.
A friend just sent me a short video clip along with the following message:

"CRAB and the PIPELINE

This is a video taken in 6000 feet of water.
An undersea robot is sawing a 3 mm wide slit (1/10th of an
inch...remember that width) in a pipeline. The pressure inside
the pipeline is 0 PSI while the pressure outside is 2700 PSI,
or 1.3 tons per square inch.

And then a crab walks by....... "

I've put it up on my website at

http://home.attbi.com/~herbko/crabvspipe1.mpg

It's almost 2MB, and the video quality is not very good, but if you have a fast link or a little time, it's well worth a look.

Hi Herb,

I work for a company that does similar work. What you have in the video is an Oceaneering ROV flooding a deepwater pipeline (I think it is the Mariner pipeline).

The project I am working on now for BP is a deepwater pipeline that goes as deep at 7,000 feet!!!!!

Cheers
