Underwater portrait series in 4°C water
Peta Pixel has published Daan Verhoeven’s underwater portrait series of people plunging into 4°C water. The tank of water was at the free diving world championships in Turku, Finland. He was able to set up in the tank and captured the moment of shock on the competitors faces as they submerged into the icy cold water.
Cal for entries: 2016 SoCal Shootout
Underwater imaging retailer Bluewater Photo has announced their 2016 SoCal Shootout. It is being held from 9 to 11 September and is open for any image shot during the period from anywhere south of Pt. Conception to north of the Mexican border. The entry fee is $40 for up to 8 still images or 3 video entries. Prizes are valued at $22,000 and registration is available now online.
Call for entrants: 2016 Monterey Shootout
The Monterey Shootout is being held at Monterey, California from 26 to 28 August. The event will include the Backscatter Party and seminars from eminent underwater photographers. It is organized by the Northern California Underwater Photographic Society and the $25 entry fee gives access to the contest, Backscatter party and the seminars.
Ikelite announces housing for D500 and port system
Ikelite has announced their new housing for the Nikon D500 camera along with a whole new port mounting system. Available is three versions, the housing is made of Ikelite’s white ABS-PC and has a redesigned zoom/focus knob and AF ON lever. The new port mount is a press-fit O ring sealed system that eliminates water from entering the housing during port changes and accommodates large diameter lenses.
From underwater model to underwater photographer
FStoppers just published an article about underwater model and underwater photographer Kristina Sherk. Sherk is well known for her collaborations with Chris Crumley as mermaid model. However, lesser known is that she is an accomplished photo editor and recently dove into the world of underwater photography herself.
Nikon announces entry level D3400 SLR camera
Nikon has announced the D3400 SLR camera. It features a 24.2 megapixel DX CMOS sensor with a native ISO range of 100-25600. It is equipped with SnapBridge Bluetooth technology and has an improved battery life over that of its predecessor. Nikon’s entry level cameras offer limited lens compatibility and since there is no fisheye lens option, the D3400 is of limited use for underwater imaging.
Wetsuit renders divers virtually invisible to underwater animals
A wetsuit developed by HECS has found a way to block the electrical signals emitted from the human body. These signals are what many aquatic creatures rely upon to detect predators and prey. By blocking these signals, the wetsuit acts like a shield for the diver observing wildlife underwater.
Brooks Institute to close in fall after 70 years
The well known and regarded Brooks Institute has announced plans to close its doors on October 31st of this year. The Ventura, California based school was one of the few places that offered higher education in the field of underwater photography.
