SUBAL AUSTRIA #1863
October 31, 2007 - 2:30PM
Arnold and Sigrid Stepanek at Subal showed a prototype Canon 1D Mk III housing (the CD3), which looked fantastic. All controls were in reach of fingers when the housing was held in typical shooting position, including the AF-ON button and both dials. The new housing uses a larger bayonet mount to accomodate new lenses, which are bigger in diameter. This probably means that there will be an entirely new line-up of ports, but I didn't find out details. The CD3 should ship during the 2nd half of November.
The C40 prototype housing for Canon 40D was also on display. In typical Subal fashion, it was compact, and I was again happy to see that all controls were in easy reach of the handles. I am *so* glad that another manufacturer has made ergonomics a priority, even for Canon users! The C40 is scheduled for December release.
Also new is a 10" dome port -- huge, and cool. The dome port itself should be available in December, but the dome shade (highly recommended) won't be available until a bit later.
Subal has also revved their Speedlight housing. The SN 58/II housing supports Canon's 580 EX II Speedlight.
They are planning housings for the new Nikon D3 and D300.

Comment(s):Some additional port info:
New housings (D3, D300, Mark III, and 40D) can be ordered with either the current port size (3rd Generation) or the new larger port size (4th Generation).
The 4th Generation Port Line is currently being produced, and won’t be ready until mid December. All current port offerings will be produced in the 4th Gen Mount.
Step Up and Step Down Extension rings are also planned for users that choose to mix & match ports.
