UnderwaterTimes reports that the leaders of eight countries launched an initiative aimed at preventing the extinction of sharks. Under the declaration signed by the Bahamas, Colombia, Honduras, the Maldives, the Marshall Islands, Mexico, Micronesia and Palau, up to 6 million additional square kilometers (2.3 million square miles) could be designated as shark sanctuaries. The pledge commits signatories to: "Maintain or develop shark sanctuaries, work together internationally to ensure healthy shark populations, and advocate for better science-based precautionary protection for sharks in all international fora."

Comment(s):Hello WetPixel,
It is my pleasure to tell you I was on Roatan when the President of Honduras, Pepe Lobo, signed this decree. A few hours later, I was one of the lucky 6 who got to be in the water with scuba gear as Mr Lobo released 2 nurse sharks that had been in captivity for over 4 years. This release was his first act signifying that Honduras is a Shark Sanctuary and that these magnificent animals deserve to be free.
I quickly removed my gear and jumped on the boat and shook his hand, as I told him we on Roatan were waiting for him with a free scuba course whenever he decided to take the plunge.
GO HONDURAS!
