Nikon Rumours has confirmed the imminent release of the Tokina AT-X 16-28mm PRO FX lens. It will be released initially as a Nikon F mount, with Canon mounts to follow soon. It has a maximum aperture of f/2.8 across the zoom range, and is designed for use with full-frame digital SLR cameras. The lens design incorporates a new SD-M (Silent Drive-Module) DC autofocus motor and GMR high-precision magnetic AF sensor, which together aim to reduce focusing noise and increase both speed and accuracy.

The optical formula includes 15 elements in 13 groups, with an aspherical P-MO element, three super-low dispersion (SD) glass elements, and two aspherical glass elements. The AT-X 16-28 F2.8 also includes Tokinas one-touch focus clutch mechanism, a nine-bladed aperture, multilayer coatings, and dust / water-resistant sealing. Maximum magnification is 1:5.26, and focusing is possible to as close as 28 centimeters. The lens doesn't have any filter threads, and includes a built-in petal hood with custom cap.
