Shark Week on Discovery Channel, has thrown up some controversial footage. In the sequence, a tiger shark named Emma is baited and when she takes the bait, is pulled by the crew up towards the surface. The shark resists and the line holding the bait parts, causing the gantry arm to which it was attached to swing round and strike the crew. The film was shot by Guerney Productions as a segment called "How Sharks Hunt" with Dave Canterbury and Cody Lundin as presenters.
This raised two question: Firstly, is this sort of activity really acceptable for people's entertainment and secondly, does this do any good for shark or marine conservation? Wetpixel moderator Drew Wong has posted about this in the forum and please feel free to discuss what, if any, action should be taken to attempt to stop filming like this from taking place.

FAIL.
Emma (the shark) never did any such thing. it was that guy who rigged it that way. He was STUPID to think a rope and his bare grip would be suffice to pull out chumsicle from inside a tiger shark’s mouth.
And what about those tanks? It wasn’t tied down on anything. NOTHING to hold it down in place. Sure it will stay upright, but geez, they put themselves, the crew, the divers underwater and any other sea creature in danger when that tank flew off “rack” (if you can even call it that).
I actually watched this guy (the one who said the line above) on commercials were he tries to prove he can “survive” because he “knows nature survival”. That he doesn’t need modern equipments to protect himself in the wild. What a MORON. For the record, I NEVER did watch that show, from the commercial itself, shows how dumb he is.
Now Bear Grylls, he might actually know what he’s doing.
Posted by eperet1986 on 08/14 at 09:15 PMTrying to find something positive to say about this video, the only conclusion I could reach was that this should service as a prime example of how it should not be done! From the actual operation to how the video was cut...very disappointing!!!
Posted by Aqua_soul on 08/14 at 10:13 PMeperet1986 I think you should have a closer look at the footage as it cearly shows the cylinder being lifted out of the bungee cord that was holding it in place. Your correct in that it should not have happened in the first place, but dont comment on things and make BIG statements if they are not correct.

Posted by stewsmith on 08/15 at 03:01 AMI haven’t watched a Shark Week program in over a decade. This shows I’ve made the right decision.

It’s drivel, isn’t it? Poor Emma…
Not to mention pretty obviously cut with footage from a different dive site…

Posted by Tim Moran on 08/15 at 06:49 AMDiscovery & Shark Week are BOGUS, moronic & destructive. This is how sharks feed? That’s like giving Mitt Romney & Rick Perry double doses of Viagra, putting them in a room full of naked, voluptuous women & calling it: This is how Republicans make romance! Bah!
Discovery spews danger, hazard, peril, death-defying, shocking & more danger along with jaws background music. Discovery is destructive & hateful.Posted by Uwrasse on 08/15 at 09:37 AMevery year they talk about the plight of sharks, how “wonderfully adapted” after hundreds of millions of yeas of evolution they are, and every year they go out of their way to bait and frenzy them to show what “mindless killing machines” they are.
Sadly the mob rules, and in the case of shark week the mob are morons.Posted by nudibranch on 08/15 at 11:59 AM“Poor Emma”
My thoughts exactly . . .

I did watch the video closely. Watched the part where the tank flew off the boat more than three times to make sure of my statement.
**Perhaps you just happened to have opened your mouth too soon.
This is what I said --
“It wasn’t tied down on anything. NOTHING to hold it down in place. Sure it will stay upright,..”
I knew there was a bungee there, that’s why I commented “sure it (tanks) will stay upright”. BUT, what if a big wave lifts the boat up? Or in really rough seas? Same thing might/will happen, tanks flying off the boat.
This would not have happened if the tanks were secured down. Meaning something was preventing it from moving up. Holding the actual tanks down with resistance.
And so you see, had you watched the clip repeatedly like I did, the tanks WERE NOT TIED DOWN. They were just standing up, NOT HELD DOWN IN PLACE.
My statements WERE INDEED CORRECT.
This is actually the first time I’ve seen this practice. Were I dive, filled/used tanks are placed in a row standing up in the middle whilst inside a wooden cubby. Then all are corded in between the yoke and the cylinder, to a steel bar running across the length of the space, strapping it (tanks) down inside the cubby. Very similar to this—http://www.liveaboard-thailand.asia/wp-content/gallery/mv-scuba-cat/MV-Scuba-Cat-Liveaboard-Diving-Thailand-Divers.jpg
And if the boats are small, it lays flat underneath sitting area where it is less likely to fly off the boat or gets picked up by a rogue rope attached to a chumsicle being pulled by a feeding tiger shark on the other end.

The sharks are a good theme to catch the costumers attention.
They are using the animals to earn money. And… when I say animals… I include the piece of meet with pigtails at the surface…
