The Digital Shootout coverage is now underway. The Digital Shootout is an opportunity for shooters to improve their underwater photo and video skills, and is sponsored by Backscatter, Aquatica, Light & Motion, Canon, Sea & Sea, Wakatobi Dive Resort and Wetpixel, among many others. Fantastic prizes will be awarded to the winners of the Digital Shootout.

This year’s Digital Shootout is taking place this week on Little Cayman island. Tune into to the coverage to get an inside track the shooters’ perspectives on the week of diving, as well as see images taken by the participants. Next year, the Digital Shootout will return to Bonaire, and you can contact Under Exposures for more information about joining the trip.

  1. Just a question… when your shooting video with the 5DMKII are you using a magic filter???
    or any white balance tricks???

  2. While I didn’t shoot with Canon stuff, I can attest that mostly all the 5D Mk II footage that I saw, was done with a Magic Filter, same for the limited personal video stuff I shot myself on my D300s rig with the 4.5mm Sigma.

You could tell the hard core 5D Mk II video shooter by their all white fins used for white balancing, and yes doing a frequent white balance to match your environment seems to be the norm.

  3. Dixter,

Berk, Jim and Russ from Backscatter shot almost all of their 5d mkII footage with a magic filter and a 15mm sigma.

I shot all of my footage with either the Canon 24mm LII or the 15mm Canon Fisheye and no magic filter. Yes, all of us are wearing white fins. (They use the Manta fins) I have a white fin and a grey fin. (Apollo)

White balance is super crucial and happened every few minutes or video quality would suffer.  Berk’s also been white balancing from sand and off of his hand with pretty good success.

All the videos are now up! http://www.thedigitalshootout.com.

    Cheers!

  4. My video consisted of clips from both the 5D Mark II and the Rebel T2i. There was a couple of clips of the stingrays that did not have a magic filter. All was done with a manual white balance. With these cameras you need to nail the WB and exposure and it will look spectacular. If not it can turn to crap really quick…

    Best regards,

    Jim
