Summary coverage from Our World Underwater 2009

Jason Heller has posted coverage of the 2009 Our World Underwater convention, which took place on February 20-22, 2009 in Illinois:

Over 15,000 people braved the cold to attend the 39th annual Our World Underwater show in Chicago over the weekend of Feb 20th - 22nd.

Since Our World Underwater is the first large scale scuba diving show of the year, often we have a chance to get our hands on some of the new underwater photography & video equipment that we have been reporting on for the couple of months prior, and this year was no different...

Wetpixel member Doug Sloss to present at Boston Sea Rovers

Digital editing classes on Adobe Photoshop CS3/CS4 and Adobe Lightroom 2

Scuba Diver Australasia field editor and Wetpixel member Doug Sloss (Sloss) will be hosting digital editing workshops at the Boston Sea Rovers 55th Clinic on March 7-8, 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts. “Photoshop CS4 for the Underwater Shooter” and “Lightroom 2 for Underwater Shooters” are ”informative classes designed to get you up and running with both programs and emphasize the adjustments required to effectively polish up your underwater images.”

RSMAS 2009 underwater photography contest open for entries

Midnight of April 1, 2009 deadline

The Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) is running a photo contest with dive travel and cash prizes with a deadline for submission of April 1, 2009. Only amateur photographers can enter (defined as those who make less than 20% of their income through photography), and photos that have been accepted for publication are ineligible.

Many Wetpixel members have placed in previous RSMAS competitions (with Jerry Kane taking the grand prize last year). You can submit up to three entries in each category (Wide Angle, Macro, Portrait), and entry is free. Winners will be announced on April 15, 2009 at the Sea Secrets Lecture Series.

Best underwater point & shoot cameras for 2009

The Backscatter team went on a quest to find the holy grail in underwater point & shoot cameras. Sometimes you just want to travel light. 2009 International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame inductions

On January 29, 2009, the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame was held for the 9th time. Once again important figures from the history of international diving were inducted at the event in Grand Cayman. Inductees include Kimiuo Aisek, Geri Murphy, Howard Rosenstein, and Larry Smith and local honorees included Stuart Freeman and Ollen Miller.

The Hall of Fame website has been updated with a full press release. There is also an updated list of members. The Member photos link through to full bio’s along with video biographies of the new members, which are also available in the Video Biography Library.

NYUPS issues last call for “I Don’t Need No Stinkin’ SLR”

March 3, 2009 at 7PM EST (tonight!)

On March 3, 2009 (tonight!) at 7PM EST, the New York Underwater Photographic Society (NYUPS) will host a presentation of “I Don’t Need No Stinkin’ SLR,” dedicated to photography with point-and-shoot cameras. The society will ”display member images or videos captured with any point-and-shoot camera and discuss the images and videos and share tips on how to maximize the outcome of your work.

The event will be held at the Arctica Bar and Grill in NY, NY. While admission is free, an is required. To learn more or confirm your attendance, visit the NYUPS calendar.

Seacam 5D Mark II housing first look, previewed in forums ...

Stephen Frink has sent us studio photos of the new Seacam 5D Mark II underwater housing, including comparison shots with the housing for the larger but equal megapixel count Canon 1Ds Mark III, and a new custom macro port for the Canon/Nikon 100/105mm lens to accommodate various teleconverter/diopter combinations with manual focus.

Surf photographer Clark Little interviewed on Good Morning America

Surf photographer Clark Little, who was featured in the most recent issue of Wetpixel Quarterly with a cover and collection of images, was interviewed this morning on ABC’s Good Morning America.

In Hawaii, Clark Little’s sometimes-surreal images of waves form a portfolio of living glass, or to borrow the poetic words of Gary Snyder, “sparkling whorls of living light.” Discuss Clark’s images or post your own attempts in the Wetpixel Surf Photography forum…
