I've just posted a short video shot in Lembeh Strait, Indonesia, with a Canon 7D in a Nauticam underwater housing with 60mm macro lens and INON Underwater Micro Semi-Fisheye Relay Lens UFL-MR130 EFS60 (AKA "bug eye" or "insect eye") -- effectively, and underwater endoscope.

The INON bug eye lens produces images with a perspective otherwise impossible to achieve -- like seeing the macro world from a small critter's perspective!

Here's a shot of the rig I used:

Special thanks to Tony Wu, David Cheung / Scubacam, and Kasawari resort, who hosted me during a special Lembeh night safari.

  1. The video is great subject wise and pretty sharp taking into account the lens used. Maybe is a lens better suited for video than for photo because the video´s smaller resolution shows less the bad image quality and CA it delivers.

I am hating the lens right know as I found impossible to get a good quality image. I think Inon could have nailed it but kept short of it and I think is a frustrating shame… I just hope they make it right in future revisions while we play with this 1000€ version 1.0 toy.

  2. Yeah, I think it could be better for still images, but I have a handful that are really sharp and beautiful, so I know that there is a sweet spot where great images can be achieved.

Video cuts out the corners, which makes it image better. I wish the Canon SLRs used the full sensor for video and interpolated down—all video would be a lot sharper, if they did that.

    Next version! ;)

  3. Very impressive Eric. What was that eel around 2 minutes in on the video. I have never seen anything like that before. This lens is certainly great for the little crabs that you shot. Do you have to use the 60mm and the Inon together? If so would it work with the 100mm as well.
