Ikelite has informally announced the Ikelite SubStrobe DS-160, which replaces the DS-125 in their product line. The DS-160 features 160 watt-seconds of power, a built-in 5-watt LED modeling light, TTL plus 10 power levels, 1.5-second recycle time, and 225 full-power flashes per charge. It uses the same battery pack, charger, sync connection, and mounting system as the current SubStrobe DS-125.  The DS-125 will continue to be available while supplies last.

The DS-160 is available for pre-order and will begin shipping in limited quantities in late July.

Notice sent to dealers from Ikelite:

We are pleased to announce the diving community’s new favorite underwater strobe--the Ikelite SubStrobe DS-160.  Our world-famous SubStrobe DS-125 has been reinvented to include exciting new features such as:

- 160 watt-sec. power
- Built-in 5-watt LED modeling light
- TTL, Full, plus 9 fractional powers
- 1.5 second recycle time
- 225 full power flashes per charge

In addition to full compatibility with all current Ikelite digital and film TTL systems, we have added extra creative control with 9 fractional power settings in half-stop increments.  A super-bright LED modeling / focus light exhibits negligible drain on the battery pack and turns off automatically while the strobe fires.  A remarkable 160 watt-seconds of power is delivered in a blazing fast recycle time of 1.5 sec from full discharge--and even faster in TTL and fractional power settings.

The SubStrobe DS-160 is now available for pre-order, with shipments in limited quantities by late July.  The SubStrobe DS-160 uses the same battery pack, charger, sync connection, and mounting system as the current SubStrobe DS-125.  Photos and full specifications will be posted on the Ikelite website later this month.

New product numbers are as follows:

#4060 SubStrobe DS-160
includes NiMH battery pack, diffuser, and standard mount with through-bolt

#3944.90 Substrobe DS-160 Package with Sync Cord
includes DS-160, diffuser, #4086.61 arm, charger and #4103.51 sync cord

#3944.91 Substrobe DS-160 Package with EV Controller
includes DS-160, diffuser, #4086.61 arm, charger and EV manual controller

The SubStrobe DS-125 will continue to be available while supplies last.  It is NOT possible to upgrade an existing SubStrobe DS-125 to SubStrobe DS-160 specifications.  No exchanges will be offered.

  3. Well as I hadn’t upgraded from used DS50’s, the news is good for me for a number of reasons.

First, an LED aiming light, higher power, etc. for not much of a price change with backward compatibility with chargers, cord, and batteries is great on its own.  The list price only changed $40 or so too according to the Ike site, so the street price will probably be about the same.  Should I be able to upgrade straight to these, I’ll get more for the same package and weight as I would’ve getting 125’s.

Second, hopefully this will send a bunch of 125’s onto the used market, which I just might snag up cheaper than I could’ve before the announcement. :)
