LaCie Little Disk - 40GB, size of a (large) lighter

LaCie has announced the “Little Disk,” a small 30GB or 40GB USB 2.0 hard disk that measures 2.64x1.69x.67 in. / 67x43 x17 mm and weights 85g / 3oz.  The unit uses 1.3” drives and has a captive USB cable for convenience.

I like my FW800 portable drives, but I’m starting to think about downsizing because of the recently-announced rules from the FAA about transporting Lithium batteries. A pair of Little Disks might be the perfect way to keep your photos backed up during dive trips to faraway places.

Looks interesting, though I have very bad luck with LaCie Drives.  I have been looking at some of the smaller (width) enclosures, I have a very thin one (about 30 Gig iPod size) and found one place that seems to have them in about 160 gigs, but forgot to bookmark it.  I think it was in the midwest somewhere.

    I was also looking at CF cards and readers as another way to try to leave HDs home.  Waiting for USB Pen drives also to drop a bit more to have a full bootable sytem and some back up room, instead of partitioning one of the hard drives I carry.

    People just do not realize how much you gotta haul when diving and taking pictures.  And it only gets worse (at least for me).  Anytime something goes wrong on a trip I up what I carry just in case.  Extra stobes, extra cables, extra hard drives, extra boot drives. LOL.

  2. Here’s another cool Lacie product.  It’s called the ”USB Key Max.” I saw it at MacWorld today, and it is really small (think thin and wide instead of thick and blocky).

    The drive inside is reportedly made by Samsung. Who knows how reliable they are.

That looks very cool and the thin design is very appealing to get into the photo backpack for hard drive space.  I will probably take a chance on something like that at some point due to its size, even though I had issues with LaCie, the PMCIA card and the FastCoder worked very well, it was more the Big Disks and there was a time they seemed to have FW Port/Bridge issues and some sketchy HDs.  So I did get a bit scared off, but it may be time to try it again.

    If they get a little larger HDs in there I will jump then unless I have a trip coming up earlier.
