Review Item: Marine Camera Distributors H2O-D Leek Detector

I was sent two versions of Marine Camera Distributors “Leek Detector” to review for Wetpixel. No, it's not a mis-spelling, this detector was designed by John Leek to help underwater photographers protect their gear in case of accidental flood. These simple inexpensive units can be mounted in just about any camera housing to provide a visual indication when water touches the electrical contacts. These detectors are “single use” in that the battery is built into the unit, but since the light only flashes during testing, or an actual flood, I think they will probably last for years without needing replacement. Retail price is $19.95.

Below are a few photos showing the detectors and how I mounted one of them in the Sea and Sea SX100 housing using electrical tape. Another mounting option would be to use hot glue, or even rubber cement, in order to make the detectors easily removable and replaceable.

The local (bottom) and remote versions of the Leek Detectors.
The water sensor for the remote version can be located away from the battery.

The detector light flashes brightly at high frequency when the Leek Detector is whetted.
Even a licked thumb will start the detector flashing.

The Leek Detector mounted inside the back of the Sea and Sea DX100 housing.

The detector light is easily mounted next to the camera LCD.

The following is the manufacturer's product description:

The H20-D Leek water detector was designed by John Leek to let the diver know if water is present inside your water proof housing. The sensor circuit on the bottom of the electronic board will cause the LED warning light to rapidly flash when water is present. This may help you get the housing out of the water before water can damage your camera. It will not help with a full flood though the warning light is flashing.

The H2O-D Does Not Prevent Floods. It is only a water detector and warning light.

The electronic unit is sealed with the battery so you won¹t need to change batteries. To test the operation of the sensor just place a damp finger across the silver sensor bars to make the yellow LED flash.

You should always check your housing seal. By placing your housing in a water container for a minute, look to see if there are any leaks before you begin your dive.
