Seacam Seaflash 250 strobe, underwater TTL test

Underwater photographer and Wetpixel friend Stephen Frink has posted an underwater TTL test from his most recent Digital Master class in Key Largo, Florida.

Basim Nasr showed up with a brand new Seacam housing for a Canon 1DMKIII and a pair of Seacam Seaflash 250 strobes… If TTL works, then the light on the exposure slate should be the same. As an aside, I have rarely seen a digtial TTL test that truly worked underwater. This one did.”

Check out the test. It’s pretty impressive—the slate retains the same exposure while the background gets darker and darker (as expected when working with a proper TTL system).

  1. Looks great. I am very interested in these strobes. However, I have tested a wide variety of TTL systems underwater (housed land strobes, Ikelike converter, Heinrichs converter, INON s-TTL etc) and found that all work well - I don’t agree that the Seacam system is the only one that truly works.   2. I have been getting perfectly good results with my Sea & Sea TTL converter, which I use with two YS-120s and a Nikon D200. Perfect exposures all the time and in all conditions, in a reasonably small package and at a very economical price. Am I the only one interested in keeping my equipment small, easily mantained and cost-effective? Seacam may very well be top of the line as some say, but I find both housings and strobes way too costly, heavy and cumbersome.

I’m not as experienced as Alex or Steve but the Seaflash 250s in conjunction with my 1D Mark III in the Seacam housing were a dream compared to the 5D, Ikelite and DS 125 combination I began with. The TTL worked like a charm for Macro. I need a bit more practice with wide angle but I always have.

    Obvious drawbacks are size and the non user replaceable battery. If the 250 TTL performance I experienced last month is indicative of the soon to be in the wild 150 TTL, I’m very excited.

    I’ll have the 250s (and probably a 150) with me on the both Ultimate Indonesia trips next year, Alex.
