Berkley White of Backscatter (a Wetpixel sponsor) sent us images of Subal's new GS Viewfinder:

"Here's a pic of Subal's new GS Viewfinder (180 style). We will begin receiving them on D70 and 1Ds/MkII housings in a few weeks as a $960 option. The Subal Digital Rebel housing will have a new back option, but the Nikon D100 housing may or may not have an upgrade available."

  1. any ideas if this will be availbe for the C10 for the Canon 10D as well?

  2. I was told about these earlier in the year, but asked to not say anything until they were released. I was told that they could be fitted to any of the subal digital housings - but looking at this image I am not sure that this is the case. Alex

  3. Holy crap!  Did I read that right.  The viewfinder is $960???  Can’t you get a Digital Rebel and lens for about that price?

  4. What's wrong with you, Jim?  Go and check out the Seacam equivalent, then you'll come back and go 'Wow...that's pretty cheap..."  :)

It's reasonable to ask whether someone who's not willing to pay the extra $400-500 for a 10D will spring for $960 for a viewfinder for their Rebel!

  5. My God!  What a great idea.  I wish some other housing people (read cheaper) would do the same thing.  Seacam’s is “only” around $1800.  A larger view is a nice thing.  I may even learn how to pronounce Subal. :)

  6. what a deception , i just send this afternoon an email to R.Sempert general manager of Subal, here's his answer :
    “Dear Jerome,
to bad but the new viewfinder does not fit to the D100 and the FS2
    housing :-((”

  7. Wow, nice to see someone else adding a large viewfinder like that!  Subal becomes more and more interesting every day…

  8. I made the decision to purchase a Subal housing for my FS2 last October at DEMA. The major deciding factor in that decision was being told by Subal that this special viewfinder was on the horizon, and that it would be available for the FS2 housing, among others. (It’s what kept their housing competitive with Seacam). So I’m more than a little disappointed in the news of the viewfinder’s limited application. Subal has let me down.

  9. This is Subal’s attempt to copy the Ikelite ‘Super-Eye’ viewfinder magnifier, right?  I believe Seacam also has an optional accesory to emulate Ikelite’s system.

  10. I'm trying to figure out which housing to go with for the D100. If Subal had a view finder like this for D100 housing, I'd be lining up to buy one!!

  11. Here in Germany there is another housing manufacturer who offers a similar viewfinder for his housings. Go to http://www.sealux.de . The GD-viewfinder costs about US-$ 500, you can have it with housings for the Nikon D70, D100, Canon 10D and 300D. No idea where else in the world these housings are available.

I have talked to quite a few people who own a (analog) sealux housing, they all are satisfied with the quality and service.

    Regards,
    Jock

  12. I am using Sealux housing with GD viewfinder for my Canon EOS 10D and I am verry satified. I can say that it is perfect and compare to other housing viewfinders this one is the best.

  13. I owned and used a Sealux SLR housing, I was not satisfied with the housing and the “service” was a desaster. I'm not gonna buy one again!!!
