NASA Astronauts head underwater for their NEEMO 21 training
Yesterday was splashdown for the NASA astronauts in their yearly underwater training off Florida. This year’s mission is the 21st NEEMO mission and will take place in the Aquarius Undersea Reef Base where the crew will live 62 feet underwater for 16 days in simulated space craft conditions.
Underwater review of EOS 1D-X Mark II on DPReview
Wetpixel sponsor Backscatter Underwater Photo and Video has recently had their review of the Canon EOS 1D-X Mk.II posted on DPReview. Their review finds that the camera’s ISO performance and manual white balance performer make it a strong contender for video shooters although its autofocus and large file sizes/storage issues are more limiting. The review highlights the ability to overcrank footage from 60fps to 30fps in order to get more stable images.
Call for entries: World ShootOut 2016
The World Shootout is calling for entries to the 2016 competition. Prizes include $1,500 in cash in the macro and amateur, $2,000 in the video, prizes totaling $16,000 in the team and $20,000 in the Destination categories. Entries must have been taken between 1 January and 1 November 2016. The winners will be announced at BOOT, Dusseldorf in January 2017.
Freediver William Trubridge breaks 102m world record
New Zealand freediver William Trubridge has broken the 102 meter world record that he held from 2010 in the Bahamas. The dive took 4 minutes and 14 seconds of sinking to 102 meters and then swimming back up with no fins. The world record dive took place in Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas.
Great white shark population threatened
A new survey has found that the population numbers of great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) off South Africa is about half what had been expected. A paper in Marine Ecology Progress Series shows the results of a six year study into the numbers of the apex predators and shows that there are only between 353 and 522 of the sharks. NOAA Okeanos exploration of Mariana Trench comes to a close
NOAA’s deepwater exploration of the Mariana Trench with the Okeanos Explorer, a former Navy surveillance vessel, has wrapped up with some wild and weird new discoveries. Many new species never seen before as well as the discovery of a WWII B29 bomber wreck on the seafloor. The Mariana Trench contains the deepest spot in the ocean at 36,037 feet and is located in the Pacific Ocean off the Mariana Islands.
Norbert Wu’s Favorite Images: Shark Diving in San Diego
Norbert Wu presents the next in his series highlighting his favorite images from his career. He takes us to California in the late 1980s and the very early days of diving and photographing with blue and mako sharks off San Diego. Also included are some very salient thoughts for aspirant professional photographers along with the text of an article he wrote describing his first assignment which required him to photograph a menacing shark near a diver.
