Article: Japanese Giant Salamanders by Don Silcock
Don Silcock provides the Wetpixel community with an illustrated guide to photographing the enigmatic and unique Japanese Giant Salamander (Andrias japonicus). These creatures grow up 1.5m (5 ft.) long and 25kg (55lbs) in weight and live in fresh water rivers in rural Japan.
Subal announces housing for OM-D E-M1 Mark II
Subal has announced their new housing for the Olympus O-MD E-M1 Mark II camera. It features Subal’s new locking system and is compatible with their Type 3 ports. Strobe triggering is via electric or optical, with optional bulkheads or electro optical converter fitted.
2017 Wreck and Shark Shootout dates announced
The 2017 North Carolina Wreck and Shark Shootout is calling for entries. The event is hosted by Olympus Dive Centre in Morehead City and will be running from 1 to 4 June, with 2 option “recon days” available prior to the the actual shootout

Inon announces compatibility with RX100 cameras
Inon has released details of the compatibility of their products with the Sony DSC-RX100 series housings for RX100 Mark 1 through to 5 cameras. Included are Inon’s wide angle and macro conversion lenses, strobes, arms and LED lights.
President Obama announces Arctic protection
President Obama has banned drilling for oil and gas in the majority of US-owned Arctic and North Atlantic. Canada has concurrently applied the same protection to its waters in the area. Octopus research video wins Emmy
A video about the work of Dr. Cliff Ragsdale, professor of neurobiology at the University of Chicago, has won an Emmy. The team sequenced the entire genome of the California two-spot octopus (Octopus bimaculoides), the first cephalopod ever to be sequenced. One of the biggest divergences from other invertebrates that the team discovered was much greater nervous system development, very similar to what is found in vertebrates.
i-Divesite releases details of Symbiosis lighting system
i-Divesite has released the details of their Symbiosis hybrid video light and strobe. Available in two versions, the SS-1 has a 2000 lumen LED light with no LCD display, whereas the SS-2 has an LCD display and either a 1000 or 2000 lumen LED light.
