Sony has released the NEX-VG20E camcorder, which has been billed as the first consumer camcorder with an interchangeable lens. The camera will shoot in HD with an AVCHD format with 50p and 25p frame rate options and will take Sony E mount lenses. It has an effective 16 megapixel resolution via a Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, with a BIONS image processor. Lastly it outputs to an SD memory card.
Prices are still to be announced and the expected release date is in November 2011.

Rarevision has released an update to their 5DtoRGB transcoding engine. The app transcodes files in the AVC/H.264 file format to either uncompressed DPX or Apple ProRes. Version 1.5 offers: Technicolor CineStyle LUT support, full support for Canon EOS series/Panasonic SLR support, higher quality output than Canon's E1 plugin, higher quality output than QuickTime Player or FCP, output at different frame rates, command line / shell scripting support, DPX, ProRes and DNxHD output (DPX & ProRes Mac only, DNxHD Windows only), complete control over gamma correction / flagging, raw YCbCr output option for unprocessed luma channel extractionand timecode support.
Version 1.5 also offers OpenGL and 64 bit support. It is free to download for Mac or Windows.

Many editors feel that Apple has downgraded the feature set of its Final Cut program in the newly released Final Cut X, and are seeking alternative solutions. One of the most promising seems to be Adobe Premiere Pro, however this is somewhat lacking in color grading ability. Black Magic Design produces DaVinci Resolve, a stand-alone pro quality color grading package which retails at about $1,000. They have also recently announced the release of Resolve Lite which is a free version of the full package.
DaVinci Resolve Lite is a free download for Mac OS.

Scuba Diving magazine has announced the results of its "Through Your Lens: Reader's Photo Contest 2011". The grand prize was won by Steffen Binke, with his image of a whale at Lighthouse Bommie, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. The competition has awarded prizes in four categories: Macro, wide-angle, behavior and divers and the winning images will be featured in the August 2011 issue of the magazine.

One of the biggest pain points in non-linear video editing workflow is the need to synchronize multiple video and audio tracks on a timeline. Many wildlife photographers I know now carry standalone video recording devices like the Zoom H4n to record ambient sounds, interviews, and other interesting audio.
PluralEyes is a small standalone application made by Singular Software used to synchronize audio and video clips directly on the timeline....

Hello, readers. As some of you know, the moderators and I have been working hard on a board redesign, rewrite, and complete migration. The board content can easily be moved over, and the new board will support user submissions for news and other content, so we can try to get some of you who want to contribute more involved in maintaining certain areas of the site.
There is one problematic decision I've been vacillating over, however, and that is the issue of forum software. I believe Invision to be the best out there. It's clean, fast, and has great admin facilities. but it won't integrate into the new board. People have hinted that they are working on integration with postNuke, but it ain't going to happen in the near future. And since Invision is actively owned as a money-making business, they probably will hesitate to relinquish control over Invision's fate to a bunch of open-source developers.
We're running postNuke on the rewritten board, and what we've got installed is pnphpBB2, which has most of the features Invision has... but just isn't as good. Actually, it pretty much does everything that I actively do as a user here on the forums. But the administration tools are definitely much worse.
I have found a converter which will probably be able to move over most of the forum content. I'm not sure what happens to attached files yet, but since most of you tend to link images, anyway, it shouldn't be a big deal.
So we have two options. One is to migrate to the new board, which will give us unified logon and other facilities. The secons is to continue to use this board. I'm leaning towards migrating everyone because it integration really is better. But I haven't decided 100% yet.
What I'll definitely do is include this board on the new server as an archive area. Eventually, we'll outgrow its need, and we can just shut it off.
I'll give you a bit of a warning. The forums will have to be shut down for a bit to do the migration -- probably in the next few days.

Those with long lens especially - 105, 105 +2x, 200, 70-180 know its IMPOSSIBLE to shoot close to 1:1 or smaller without being "settled in" and when we are settled in be it on rock, sand, rubble, manmade structures, partial coral, partial sponge whatever - we are always having an impact (to some extent) on the ecology.That is very true. When I shoot 100 + diopter, or 100x2, I almost always have to support myself with a single finger. I normally hold the left-strobe with one hand and extend my pinky out to gently brace myself on a dead section. Otherwise, you just cannot shoot super-macro -- unless there are people out there with much better technique than I have.

I don't think you can go wrong with higher-end Canon or Epson printers.
Many people I know have the Epson 2200 (which is what I have) and love it. I love mine.
It is archival, and has "light black" and "black" ink cartridges, and the black one can take "matte black" ink for really dark blacks on matte paper.There probably isn't too much of a difference from normal viewing angles between the less expensive and more expensive printers. It's the ink that will get you in the wallet in the end, so the $3-400 difference up-front isn't as big of a deal as it seems.
You should probably decide if you want wide-carriage or not, first. That will limit your choices.

The YS 90 AUTO does not do TTLActually, it does,...
The strobe features Auto 1 (single flash slave, hard wired trigger AUTO), Auto 2 (Auto for preflash cameras), and conventional TTL with compatible systems.
...but not with the Digital Rebel (except Aquatica A300ttl)

Both are reputable, and have given money back to people I know who have lost equipment. DAN gives you cash for replacement, which is great because you aren't locked into buying the same camera again (it may be obsolete by the time it floods). I believe DEPP works by replacement, on their terms (meaning that they can get you the equipment themselves instead of providing cash for you to do your own shopping). Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

Even among people who value conservation there is a difference in opinion. For example, I don't mind interacting with wildlife, as long as I am not in a proper preserve. I don't mind baiting sharks in for photos, because I feel that the photos taken help me to evangelize about the "truth" about sharks to people who otherwise would just think that they are viscious eating machines who deserve to be fished out of the ocean.
Not sure what I am trying to say. While there is a clear difference between someone who lays on the reef -- whether voluntarily or involuntarily -- and someone who absolutely never touches anything, who is to say that using flash photography on something like a cephalopod doesn't count as harrassment? I feel guily when I take shots of animals at night, but that guilt doesn't stop me from doing so. (Having said that, it's not like I sit there and take 100 shots of a single animal. But I have been known to take 10.).
Anyway, just some ramblings.
Oh yeah. Just because someone voices publicly that they are really into not touching the reef doesn't mean that they follow their own rules. I've seen examples of that as well.

As a flash i have a Sea And Sea YS 90 auto. Wich works as TTl with the UK Germany housing.The YS 90 AUTO does not do TTL. You set the f-stop on the strobe, and it quenches when it sees enough light (and the sensor is on the strobe itself).

A lot of divers I know actually don't like UW photographers because of this and I can understand thier point.
I am certainly not suggesting that it is ok to lie on the reef.

Yeah. We saw the Exilim housing at DEMA, and it was ridiculously expensive! That camera isn't going to produce very nice shots underwater without a strobe --- which would, of course, defeat the purpose of having such a tiny camera.
No shutter lag would be nice, though.

I don't know which link you are talking about, but you have to click on the original links to get content. This board software truncates the URL title, but preserves the entire URL.
I think you are getting off on the wrong foot here on our forums. I -- and a lot of people here -- put a lot of time into the maintenance of this site, and it is very much a labor of love. there is certainly a lot to learn, but you have already upset many of the people who might want to help.
that's my 2 cents. i'm locking this thread, as we as a community don't have time to participate in petty squabbles when there are so many other people out there who also have something to give back to the community (e.g. some semblance of respect).

I'm going to be realistic and say that virtually EVERY photographer holds on to "dead" parts of the reef, or at least does the "one finger push-off" after getting in precarious positions. Having said that, I've seen people do it responsibly; they are aware of their surroundings and have respect for the critters.
But some people do exhibit horrible reef destroying behavioUr, which is just... infuriating to watch.
Canon announces the C100 and C500, 2 new Cinema EOS cameras

Canon has added two new cameras to its EOS digital cinema range. The EOS C500 captures 4K, 2K or HD image quality and can output 4K as a 10-bit uncompressed raw data stream or 2K as a 12-bit RGB 4:4:4 signal to an external recorder. Whilst doing so, it can simultaneously record a 50 Mbps HD file onto two in-camera CF cards. There will be two versions, one for for PL mount lenses and another for EF/EF-S and EF Cinema. The camera will be available from October at $30,000.
The EOS C100 is a smaller camera, outputting individual R, G, and B channels for each full HD 1920 x 1080 frame. It records in an AVCHD format featuring a maximum recording bit rate of 24Mbps in a 4:2:0 color space. It records to two SD cards or can output uncompressed HD via an HDMI connection. This output includes superimposed time code and 2:3 pull-down marker information. The EOS C100 will also be released in October and retails at $7,999.
