A call to Arms!
wetpixel replied to DigiSnap Mark's topic in Lights, Strobes, and Lighting Technique
I've been curious for some time about what the options are for the most commonly used arms, and how they connect to housings and strobes. This will be very informative. -
This is a photo I took of Dave Breitigam, in Kona. It's a Ikelite Coolpix 990 housing, with two Ikelite DS-50 strobes (I believe). [Edited on 2-10-2002 by echeng]

not officially mine, but I'm working on getting one. Canon D30 housing with flat port for 17-35/2.8, and Canon 550EX strobe housing. And, for fun, the camera counter of the Kona Aggressor II:

Substrobe 200 vs. YS-90DX for housed D30
wetpixel replied to wetpixel's topic in Lights, Strobes, and Lighting Technique
James - Do you have links for those arms? I'm a total flash arm newbie. I'm considering keeping my SubStrobe 200 and getting another one to match it. It just pumps out so much light. -
Substrobe 200 vs. YS-90DX for housed D30
wetpixel replied to wetpixel's topic in Lights, Strobes, and Lighting Technique
yeah -- I guess the problem for me is the arms. I'm always wrestling with positioning the strobe, whereas these other fancy arms I see are much easier to maneuver. -
One person has emailed me, telling me that wetpixel.com is slow. Have any others out there experienced this? It seems about the same as other sites to me, except that there is some php scripting going on, which may make it *slightly* slower than other sites. Also, since I had to support netscape 4, I had to use images for the header graphics instead of using DHTML. grrrr.

I currently am in the process of switching housings (to a UK Germany D30 housing), and am having some strobe decision problems. I used to use an Ikelite Substrobe 200 with my Ikelite housed Coolpix 990, which I was able to get great results from, but it's sort of... heavy, and can be hard to maneuver with the quick grip arm that I had it mounted on. I can't imagine trying to shoot with two of them at once. I'm thinking of switching to dual Sea&Sea YS-90DX strobes. This is the setup Jim Watt has been shooting with, and he loves it. They take AA batteries, and are light and small. Any opinions on these strobes?

James - Well... no one pays me or David, and we run this site. The "small fee" is covered by feeling like we are providing a good resource to others who enjoy underwater photography. [Edited on 2-7-2002 by echeng]

If people are willing to write them, we'll host them here and put them in the "features" section. We can link them from a special Tutorials forum topic to make them easy to find. Let me know if anyone is interested in writing.

A Bit confused.....
wetpixel replied to shrike71's topic in Shooting Technique, Workflow and Editing
On the kona trip with Jim Watt, we took PT-XX housings down to 110-120 ft and never had problems with them. They're really small, too, so you can stick 'em in cracks and fire away with the onboard flash. [Edited on 2-5-2002 by echeng] -
Yeah... Steve said that we could shut down the forums over there, but that his forum format wouldn't support a link back to here instead. I'm not sure what to do. I guess I could import Steve's forums by copying the HTML pages themselves and archiving them in messages on this forum. Any opinions?

FOR SALE: Ikelite Coolpix 990 Underwater Housing NOW ON EBAY (or pick-up in SF Bay Area) http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?V...item=1322859035 Reason for selling: upgrading to D30 housing Includes housing, orange filter, custom Pelican case, and port cover. Port has (barely) visible microscratches that do not (as far as I can see) affect image quality. Just add a Coolpix 990 and a strobe (optional), and you're ready to go! This housing was used to capture all of the photos on the following trips: http://echeng.com/travel/palau/ http://echeng.com/travel/bora/ and the Coolpix 990 photos taken by me on the Kona Aggressor trip (only the 990 shots by me were with this setup): http://wetpixel.com/kona/ Please email eric@echeng.com if interested. Depth of Field in Digicams is ~5x bigger than w/ a 35mm
wetpixel replied to james's topic in Photography Gear and Technique
Digital cameras with larger sensor sizes (like the housed D30 we were using in Kona) don't have such a severe "problem." (it says this in the articles you link to, but I just wanted to repeat it here, for clarification. I guess it can be viewed as a benefit to have greater depth of field, but I'd rather have the option to shorten depth of field to make subjects stand out more. We can always buy bigger strobes for more light. -
I suppose we should go over to Steve's and post about the new forums. I'm not sure whether Steve will want to keep those forums open, or whether he'll end up diverting people to our new rehosted forums. I was just concerned about getting the new site up before leaving for vacation.
