  1. @davec13o2 Have you made a decision about getting the Backscatter 4300? Did you end up trying it out? What are your thoughts on the light?
  2. Hello all you lovely video shooters I am wondering if anyone has a comparison of the below lights. I am planning to focus on both macro photo and video this summer, for photo I have the Backscatter MF-1. I also have Kraken WSR + 5000 light but I dont really like its user interface, I usually turn it onto strobe mode and I cant figure out how to get it out of strobe mode while underwater. I am hoping for some real life uses for the Backscatter. Yes I have reviewed the Backscatter macro page a ton but I couldn't find anything on the Kraken 5000 video light. 3. I just got this cable and its working better than any of the home made cables I have tried to make. I am using an Olympus EPL10 in and AOI housing with the MF-1 https://www.amazon.com/DIVTEK-Connection-Underwater-Photography-55Inches/dp/B082PRK942/ref=pd_ys_c_rfy_rp_m_all_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B082PRK942&pd_rd_r=SPKC68YWD9B7E1VEHKXW&pd_rd_w=OjJ5e&pd_rd_wg=2FUbA&pf_rd_p=5d61ee21-c9c1-4f53-887e-8583c213529a&pf_rd_r=SPKC68YWD9B7E1VEHKXW&psc=1&refRID=DA8SNMVJ9TY65NR08BKS
  4. I would suggest taking a look at this link (1) or (2) Backscatter does a really amazing job explaining how to use this camera and all of its different modes. 7. @demonboy If you or anyone else reading this are still looking for a Sony RX100Va I have one for sale, Ive linked the thread for your convenience. I have upgraded to something else so we could probably work out a price that is good for both of us.
  8. Bill, I just poked around your site, you have many nice photos. If your interested in getting together for a photo dive I would love to join you. If you run any clinics I would also be interested in joining.
  9. Yesterday afternoon I had a nice chat wit Robin at Backscatter. We were able to chat for nearly 30min. I think my biggest issue is changing my mind set for macro photography. I am trying to move from fish id images to macro images. When using the 60mm macro on a Spanish Shawl I think I'm going to try to just focus on its "head" and rinophores instead of trying to get the whole organism in the image. Ill try to share some photos when I can get back in the water, we are getting rain just often enough to kill weekly diving.
  10. HUUMM, there isnt much differeance between the Oly 30mm and the Pana 30mm. Pana is f2.8, longer and heavier $298 Oly is f3.5, shorter working min focus distance $224 for context the 3 nudibranch that I hunt the most are: Nudi - Size Spanish Shawl Nudi - up to 2.75in (75mm) long Opalescent Nudi - up to 3in (80mm) long Hopkins Rose Nudi - up to 1in (25.4mm) long
  11. I currently have an Olympus 60mm macro on a Olympus EPL10 ( I have this combo). I am typically diving Beach dives in Southern California, USA. I have noticed I have to keep quite a bit of water between my lens and the subject to fit the subject in the frame, for macro I am going after Nudibranch like the Spanish Shawl, Opalescent, and Hopkins Rose. I am wondering if I should look into the Olympus 30mm macro to get closer to the subject? Do you think I should keep diving my 60mm this summer and see if I can get it to work? I'm open to ideas. Olympus has a 2x crop factor so the 60mm and 30mm lenses have a 120mm and 60mm effective focal length.
  12. This is the main reason why I haven't ordered the macro 4300 light. I would really like to try it out and maybe even get rid of my Kraken 5000 WSR Light (its so dang big and heavy). The main reason I don't use the Kraken AND MF-1 is I don't want to have to manage different types of batteries on my adventures. I would have gladly paid a little bit more for the MF-1 strobes if they were able to use the same larger 21700 batteries as the Macro 4300. I also confirmed with Backscatter that the batteries are not interchangeable :-(. For the MF-1 The 5x button press is not that bad at all. its just a simple rapid press on the button, it doesn't have to be exactly 5 but like at least 5. I press the power button repeatedly until I see the status light come on then I know I'm good to go.
  13. Im brain farting here as I cant see a way to edit the post. I have sold the A7iii and Tamron 17-28. I no longer need the Oly 40-150.
  14. To echo off of what ChrisRoss is saying I recently purchased the Olympus E-PL10 and the 60mm Macro (and AOI housing from Backscatter). I really really like the camera and its compactness. its no where near as nice as the EM1mkii or mkiii but it was within my budget and has allowed me to continue to practice my photography. The camera body is no bigger than the Olympus TG6 camera.
  15. Nice to meet you as well Brett. Is there any chance you would be able to share the location of the Piper Warrior or the Blue Caverns? I understand if you don't want to share the locations. I would defiantly like to check out the caverns. Maybe after a few more deep dives I'd like to check out the Piper. I'm not too shrilled about diving deep just to dive deep but if we have an objective then that sounds like a good time.
  16. I personally keep a backup light in my BCD pocket (boltsnapped to a leash), I keep my main dive light boltsnapped to my right chest d-ring. I will keep the main light in my bcd pocket while entering and exiting the water once I'm all set up on the surface I'll then move it to my chest d-ring for use underwater and replace it in my pocket prior to exiting the water. I like to keep my camera leashed to my left chest dring at all times (its a stretchy coil leash), I also have a short leash for my right chest dring so I can go hands free to put my fins on and get ready on the surface before diving. I also have a small adapter I can put on my cold shoe to hold my main flashlight but I haven't tried using it on my new housing since getting dual backscatter MF1 strobes. I hope that makes sense.
  17. Call Backscatter; I had an issue with one of my strobes and they quickly swapped it out, no questions asked. the green light means the strobe is on and in standby, the blue light means the strobe is charged up and ready to go; the red light could mean that your battery is low on power. Have you tried using the recommended nightcore battery?
  18. Brett, I follow Drew and Richard on socials I met those guys on the SDE when we went to Farnsworth (the trip with several scooter casualties) I was working on my Deep Diver specialty. Watching those guys and following their socials makes me want to get into tech. Drew's Photos are awesome and I look forward to his diver reports. Id love to join you guys to learn as much as possible from you guys when you do rec level dives. I'm looking to start learning sidemount and self reliant diver to try to be a better dive buddy. If you guys are planning to hit any of the OC or LA beaches lets try to link up (if you want, i wont be offended if you dont ;-))
  19. Hey All, Im selling off my Sony A7iii kit. Sony A7iii + 3 batteries, if you have a watson charger Ill throw in the 2x charging plates I have for it. $1500 photos Sony 50mm f1.8 $200 photos Tamron 17-28 F2.8, never used $750 photos Tamron 20mm f2.8, used once indoors $200 photos Tamron 28-75 f2.8, $850 photos Sigma 100-400 f5-6.3, this is an EF mount lens and required the MC11 to be used on the A7iii $650 photos MC11 adapter $175 photos Sony 18-105 f4 (apsc lens) $450 photos Accessories: Macro extension tubes, reverse ring, Kirk L-Bracket photos I also have a Sony RX100Va kit for $1,200, I would prefer to sell as a kit. Sony RX100Va Photos underwater housing Photos Macro ring light Photos Also, I am looking for an Olympus 40-150 f2.8 Pro if you have one to sell let me know.
  20. Bill or anyone else, Have you tried using the 90deg style of connector? I get some interference on the housing side of the connection when using my Olympus epl10 and Panasonic 8mm inside the AOI housing with dome port. I would be okay with a diy cable if I can the 90deg connectors. Would it be better to get a 1 to 2 cable (1 port connector to two strobe connectors) or just run 1 to 1 cables? I am also using the Backscatter Mini Flash, eventually moving towards dual strobes when I get a chance.
  21. Does anyone have a solution to be able to use these with a 90deg elbow? Im trying to use these DIY cables but there is some major interference when using my EPL10 and the 8mm Panasonic in the AOI housing with dome port. I can share a photo of the interference if that would help.
  22. Have you decided on a camera system yet? I have recently upgraded from a Sony RX100Va to an Olympus E-PL10. I am thinking of selling my Sony RX100Va and the housing i used with it (Fantasea Line vacuum)
  23. I would recommend the Panasonic 8mm over the Olympus 8mm, yes the Oly is F1.8 but I dont think we will ever shoot at f1.8 underwater. The Oly is also a lot longer than the Pana lens so you might need to get an extension ring depending on you set up, for my Epl10 I needed to get an extension ring to use the Oly I did not for the Pana. I also have the 60mm macro and its a great lens. These are the only two lenses that I am taking underwater at the moment. I also have the Oly 12-40 F4 Pro and I'm looking to get the Oly 40-150 f2.8 Pro and Oly 42mm (non pro) in the near future, these would be used for topside photography.
